Though this anime has been around for a couple of years now, it doesn't seem as if enough people have had the opportunity to enjoy it.
My warning for any new viewers: This anime does not hesitate in the beginning of the story. They get straight to the point. Those of you who have seen it know exactly what I mean when I say that the opening scene wastes no time in showing you what this show is all about: violence, and plenty of blood+gore to go around.
The story is based on Lucy, a human-hating diclonius. A diclonius is basically a special species of human, who get thier traits at birth. They are easily recognizable with a pair of horns growing from the skull. They are also equipped with deadly vectors, (arms spreading from thier backs) which are invisible to the human eye. These vectors are capalbe of cutting even the most solid materials (including bone) into perfectly cut pieces. Lucy somehow manages to escape a heavily guarded stronghold, where she was locked up and experimented on. She calmly exits the building, killing most of the guards around her. Just when she is about to escape unharmed, a sniper manages to strike her in the forhead, which sends her falling off of a cliff and into the ocean. Luckily for her, she survives.
On the same day, Kohta and his cousin Yuka, happen to be spending their day on the beach. Before they know it, there is a strange pink-haired girl with horns standing before them in the ocean. But due to the bullet she took to the head, she has forgotten her purpose. (which is to end humanity) It is here that she shows her split personality for the first time. A ditsy, clumsy, innocent girl, who seems to have almost no sense of what's going on in the world around her. Kohta and Yuka kindly clean her up, and allow her to stay with them at thier large home.
The twist falls when Kohta has his first mysterious flashback of a strange shadow. He has this flashback the first time he realizes that the horns on Lucy's (newly named Nyu by her new caretakers) head, is not a headband, and are indeed bone. Somehow, Kohta and Lucy might be connected from somewhere deep within thier pasts. And that's where the mystery of Lucy lies..
Though this anime is packed full of violence, adult language, nudity, blood, gore, and just about any other mature content you can possible think of, I found it very easy, and almost comforting to relate to this story. It deals with troublesome pasts, relationships and romance, abusive parents, life and death... all the things that we deal with here in the real world. All off the things that make up our world, has been put carefully into one teriffic animated story. I have to say, the storyline in this series is amazing, completed with bueatiful music and wonderful scenery. Not to mention a nice range of different characters and personality types. Though very sad at times, there are some quite ammusing and funny moments in Elfen Lied. With a great story, great animation, and great voice actors, Elfen Lied quickly became one of my personal favorites.
My rating: 5/5 biggrin
