• The Gold Stars
    On flags
    Hanging down from the pole
    They look so empty
    But in truth
    They mean so much more.
    Who did this family lose
Just to let you keep going?
    How long did they last?
    Did they think
    It was worth it?
    Remember them always
In the form of gold stars.Gold Stars was written after reading 'Thin Wood Walls', a book about Japanese Americans during the attack on Pearl Harbor. It told the story of an eleven year old boy who was forced to leave his home so he wouldn't spy for the Japanese. He spent two holidays there in a small room with his mother, grandmother and brother-his father elsewhere. In the book, the brother goes to fight in the army. Whenever someone dies in battle, the family will have a flag with golden stars-hence my poem.
