• what is this day we hold so dear
why do we celebrate this night
is it just this feeling here
that makes the winter warm and bright

is it the spirit that never wilts
    like the ancient evergreen
is it the friendly ties we've built
    stretching like a sparkling stream

Is it the presents neatly wrapped
    waiting patient in the shade
Is it the face of children rapt
or the jubilent cries they bayed

    Is it the delicously absurd
life we give to stories old
    snowman sing in rhyming word
    reindeer flying, so we're told

    Is it roaring fire light
    shining off the mantel's gold
Is it candy, red and white
still so sweet and yet so old

Is it the festive party night
    clad in shining icy dew
    a last of dancing light
6 days before we start anew

what christmas means, as a whole
not the presents nor the lights
but just one single special soul
wrapped up gently in two arms tight
