• Saturday night, December 31
My friend had a party, so wild and unrehearsed
As the music played and cheers came from the crowd
They began to circulate, enough to make any alcoholic proud

Booze, booze and more booze, that’s the only way to describe it
I said no way, not even a little bit
I remembered, Mom, what you said
Don’t drink and drive unless you want to end up dead

So I savored a coke, nice and clean
The party continued as the band screamed
But soon it ended and the kids dispersed
Just as the clock said January first

Most of the kids had a stagger in their step
But, me, I didn’t, I was above the rest
I was so happy, so proud of my will
I am above the influence and the pointless thrill

Humming a jingle, I drove down the street
I saw the headlights, almost swaying to a beat
The end fishtailed, the tires skid
I slammed on my brakes, oh god this was it

I woke up on the pavement, everything ached
I was covered in blood, like swimming in a lake
Then it hit me, I'm almost dead
Sirens wails and the officer shakes his head

"They're finally here but it’s far too late
She’s going to pay for his mistake
Drunk and passed out at the wheel
The stench was so bad it made me reel"

Mom, I wish you were here
To comfort me, guide me when nothing is clear
Tell Sam I love him, even though I acted like a mean sister
Remind him to stand up to that bully and say "Hey mister!"

I wish dad was stateside and not fighting a war
It's been so long, I can't remember your face anymore
    I'm scared, so unprepared
Why me, not him, why was he spared?

I said no but he said yes
Now there's going to be one less
He chose to drink and drive
    And that's why I'm won't survive

There is so much I wanted to do, explore the world, trek the mountains
    Check out Venice's ornate fountains
Visit the White House and Buckingham Palace
And just once see an aurora borealis

Its too soon and its too late
God and me have a date
    Good-bye everyone
    My time is done
