The night before Mulan's crippled father is to go to war, Mulan sits out on a dragon statue in the rain. She sees her parents through their window, her mother crying. Her father blows out the candle, and in that moment, Mulan knows that she can't let him ride off to his death. So she takes her father's conscription notice and uses his sword to cut her long hair before putting on her father's armor and leaving in his place.
