Madame is a title for a woman, and is literally "my lady." The French madame is in turn derived from the Latin mea domina meaning 'my mistress'. "Madam" may also refer to a woman who runs a brothel.
Generally speaking though, it is a term given to those women whose name is not known, as a polite form of address.
