• Contemplations Over a Cigarette

    So evanescent drifts the smoke
    Through unrelenting chill,
    And brings my melancholy joke
    To echo through night's still.

I watched the trails go teeming off -
Flash floods along the plain -
And gazed through them with a light cough
    Then drifted off again

To places I had never seen,
    Where merrily we roam -
A thought your mind would never glean
So far from your new home.

A shiver then ran through me
Gaunt eyes saw through the haze
Within my thoughts - their own maze -
    Raindrops on torrid sea

Waves crashed with such a violent roar
    The helmsman washed away,
And sailors prayed to see the shore
    With pious thoughts of day.

The mainsail tore and crashed on down.
    The splinters in their eye
Like cat-claws flew, a thorny crown.
    Thunder drowned out their cry.

    The ship did sink beneath the brine;
    Survivors float there still.
But their salvation won't be mine
    And swim along I will.

    A footstep breaks my dreaming.
    A disapproving glare
    Confronts my selfish scheming
For the instant it is there.

I soon go back to wishing sweet
    Of my ponderous thought,
And those clear eyes I'll never meet,
    My charms so overwrought.

The embers flew me down to ash -
    My reverie came rushed.
I dreamt in such a hasty splash
    Till under heel they crushed

    The sordid self-loathing did stay
Too long on thoughts of you,
And lovely things I couldn't say,
    And things we'd never do.
