• The Traveling Bard

They travel here, they travel there
    Those bards, they travel anywhere
To sing their songs and tell their tales
Along the roads, or along the rails

Playing lutes, and flutes and pipes
Dressed in blues and greens and whites
A feather in their eloquent hat
Their stomachs looking none to fat

For the bards life isn’t one of ease
It’s filled with strife, toil and disease
They never know where the road will lead
As they travel upon their sturdy steed

Playing lutes, and flutes and pipes
Dressed in blues and greens and whites
A feather in their eloquent hat
Their stomachs looking none to fat

Stories woven from truth and life
Of men whose lives are filled with strife
Of murders committed with sword or knife
Or the man who cheated on his wife

Tales of wonder and tales of dread
Songs of the living and those of the dead
Ballads of love and ballads of loss
Poems about money and fortunes lost

Playing lutes, and flutes and pipes
Dressed in blues and greens and whites
A feather in their eloquent hat
Their stomachs looking none to fat

No, the bardic life is not for all
No swanky life in castle halls
They live their lives upon the road
    Never knowing where they go

So next you see the traveling bard
Remember that his life is hard
For bards are few and very rare
So offer him a comfy chair

Pour a cup of cheer for him
Encourage his art, go out on a limb
Ask him to sing a song or two
And don’t forget to pay his due.

Playing lutes, and flutes and pipes
Dressed in blues and greens and whites
A feather in their eloquent hat
Their stomachs looking none too fat
