The Mask

I try to be myself,
And let others see who I really am
Instead I’m hidden,
Hidden, behind the mask.

I try to make myself known,
Let my thoughts out, for everyone to hear.
Instead I play Hide & Seek.
My place to hide is behind the mask.

I try not to be shy,
Let others see who I can be.
Instead I run away,
And go hide behind the mask.

I try to get my voice out,
And not let it get stuck.
Instead I cower,
And move the mask in front of me

I try to have courage,
And speak loud and clear,
Instead I find sanctuary,
Sanctuary behind the mask.

I try not to be afraid
Of what others think of me,
To be myself and let myself
Talk a stream of words.
Instead I’m terrified,
I get comfort from the mask.

Hidden behind the mask.
