• as the cold begins to seep in,
the chill is in the air,
the leaves begin to change their colour,
    green turns to brilliant red,
the leaf is long since dead,
    this colour its last attempt,
at being remembered for its life,
    eventually red turns to brown,
    the leaf devoid of life,
    falls to the ground,
    passers by step on it,
    crushing its once beautiful form,
forcing its remains into the ground,
it settles in for the long winter ahead,
    dormant in the earth,
decomposing into the nutrients that will continue the life of the tree,
that once bore this beautiful thing,
this leaf that once young and green,
transformed to red and then brown,
    fallen from the heavens,
forever to remain in the ground.
