• I got out of bed after another restless night
I stood in front of the mirror
And gazed upon the stranger it reflected
That solemn face has the eyes of one who’s been utterly neglected
I spoke to him asked him who he was
    Our mouths moved in sync
    But I refuse to believe
That the stranger in the mirror is me
    It simply cannot be
I asked him if he knew where he was
And at last he sang to me
In a voice that was bittersweet
    He sang
    “I know what it means
    To be defeated
    To be downtrodden
And I know what it means
    To be rejected
    To be discarded
    I know what it means
To long for the solace of
    Being six feet underground
    I know what it means
Yes I know what it means
    And how it feels
To be kicked when you’re down.”
His words left a ringing in my ears
He said “We are just the sum of our fears.”
And he asked me if he frightened me
    I couldn’t lie I said “You do.”
“Well,” he said “then I’m a part of you.”
    And that’s when I knew
That every word he’d said to me was true
And not at exactly the same time
It was nothing more than treason with a rhyme
I begged him just to leave me alone
    But the mirror kept reflecting
    And despite all my rejecting
That stranger had already wormed into my skin
And taken me over from within
And now I just sit and wait for the end
Or for someone to be my friend
And if you ever ask me if I know where I am
My reply will be this again and again
    I know what it means
    To be defeated
    To be downtrodden
And I know what it means
    To be rejected
    To be discarded
    I know what it means
To long for the solace of
    Being six feet underground
    I know what it means
Yes I know what it means
    And how it feels
To be kicked when you’re down.
