• Little girl whispers
    Whispers in mommy’s ear
Whispers ‘mommy I want that one’
    And mommy sighs
    And mommy says no
Mommy says no because that one is gone
    That one has left
    That one has vanished
That one had to say goodbye
And mommy doesn’t want to say goodbye
Never wants to say goodbye to little girl

    Little girl is not little
    Not little anymore
Little girl is now big girl
So big girl has made her way
    Her way through her life
Her life that has flown by
    Flown right by mommy’s eyes
    Flown right by mommy’s grasp
Mommy wants to hold on to little girl
But mommy has to say goodbye
Mommy never wanted to say goodbye to little girl

Big girl is on her own
On her own in a big place
    With rooms,
    With neighbors,
    With new little girls
And now mommy has another little girl
    But mommy is sick
    Mommy can’t tell big girl
Because mommy isn’t gonna let go
Because mommy doesn’t want to say goodbye
Mommy never wants to say goodbye to girls

    Mommy is loosing
    Losing her grasp
    Grasp on big girl
    Grasp on little girls
Mommy closes her eyes and smiles
As little girls and big girl come in
    To say hello
And mommy holds on to that hello
And says I love my girls
But now mommy has to say goodbye
When mommy never wanted to say goodbye to girls

    Mommy is now watching girls
    Happy, flying
    Happy, with God
God who makes sure girls are good
    Good and fed
    Good and happy
    Good and well
So mommy is now ok with goodbyes
Because she knows that girls are ok
    Girls will always be ok
Girls will never have to say goodbye
    At least,
Not for a long, long while
    So mommy smiles
    And always smiles
