Putting Lepers in Leopard Skin
-
The word "Requited"... Just doesn't sound right.
The word "Unrequited," on the other hand,
has a certain poetry and flow to it
"Requited" just sounds like you meant to say "Unrequited"
I don't know a thing about how to write a love poem
Which is strange, since I have so many of them
What i do know is how to bring beauty from the hideous
I am a writer of denials
Cloaking carnage in cliches
and digging Deities from the ditch
I can put lepers in leopard skin
resurrect dead angels
and even lift fallen stars in the palm of my hand
I have the power to transform teen mothers into heroines
and boil the broken hearts away from the heroin
I can spoon feed a girl
everything she's dreamed of hearing Prince Charming say
since she was 6
But how am I supposed to write about how I love you?
I actually love you.
There's no gimmick here
No metaphors assigned to your name
listed in a notebook somewhere
I refuse to offer recycled words
to try to trap you between quotation marks
Before you, I loved in soundbites
Honesty was just another word
for similes strung in intricate nets
that never failed to ensnare their targets
When I whispered into an ear
I spilled the same poison that killed King Hamlet
and kissed those ears closed so no cure could seep in
I am only just now being reborn
from a self destruction I designed
And I stand here before you as a creature more refined
Purified from the blessing of your lips against my cheek
You are the only savior I seek
But how do I make that beautiful?
Those are just statements.
Where's the poetry?
You deserve every image that I held on reserve
to spit at a whim
but those words are so dim compared to you
They're galaxies away from the Truth
Matches being thrown beside a star
I'm used to going to far, but never giving enough
The skin on my hands is tough from being bitten by the mouths I feed
I've never been good at distinguishing what I want, and what I need
There's nothing right about what I've done
Or who I am
Except you.
You are everything that's good.
You're 90s cartoons, 80s movies, and 70s music
The best of every world
The sleep I get in a high school desk, Hawaiian Punch,
and the feeling of the last cigarette I ever smoked
You're the relief of knowing McCain didn't win the presidential election
and the excitement of hearing there's a new Xmen movie coming out
You're a song I've never heard, but I'm damn sure gonna dance to
So how do I make all that beautiful?
I don't have to.
You already did.

Description:
For a while, since I've been with my darling Katelyn, I've been wondering why I had a hard time writing something about her. In the past, I've always been able to conjure some beautiful piece for girls I claimed to love (see: The Lands We Loved In, Lunar Eclipse, etc). I had to evaluate why that was, and he's that.
