Chapter Six of Our Days As Friends
Chapter Six
The Kiss

“Wow. I didn’t know you liked Evan that much! I thought it was puppy love, but when you see it when you look at them, that’s real!” exclaimed grandpa.
“Well, you’re in for a surprise.”
That same day, at lunch I sat with Evan and Jane as I always do.
“Hey, I was playing Nintendogs, and my dog did a back flip!” I said.
“Which dog learned to do that? Was it Chris? Oh! It was Betsy wasn’t it! Tell me!” Jane begged.
“It was my new dog. She’s a cocker spaniel named Jesse.”
“Oh! Is she as tall as Betsy, taller?”
“She is the third smallest in the WHOLE GAME.”
“Oh.”
I went up and dumped off the food left on my tray. When we got back to class, Mrs.Chandler started reading Sign of the Beaver to the class.
While she was reading, I had a crazed idea to get Evan to know I like him.
I took a scrap of paper and scribbled this:
Do you want to go out with me?
YES / NO
Elizabeth

I put the note in his mail box. I hoped he would get it with his Friday stuff to go home.
“Hey, my box is empty!” said Evan. I was too busy to hear him say that. I was helping Jane with her packet that was due next week.
“Good afternoon everyone, it’s time for dismissal. The following students will be picked up by their . . . ” The intercom was interrupted as the final bell rang late.
“Hey! Mrs.Griffin swore!” Tom yelled. Mrs.Griffin was our school secretary and was in charge of announcing the pick up students.
“....Sorry about that, the following students are for pick up dismissal:
Evan Burhoe . . .
Jane Burnham . . . ” A few more kids were mentioned.
“And Elizabeth Treichel. Now over to Mr.Southam for busses.”
“Hey, we can all walk together!” I exclaimed. I was almost never dismissed, and we have to wait until everyone was called up before leaving.
“Ok, but we have to let Mike walk with Ryan today.” Evan said. Ryan is Mikes oldest of his younger brothers.
“Ok! Enough with the whole Mike thing!” Jane feverishly replied.
“Whoa, Jane. Why so tense?” I ask.
“I’m having a bad day.”
“What’s so bad about today?”
“Don’t you get it Liz? I live in a square world.”
“What’s so square about it?”
“There are four things I like that I’m allowed to do!”
“Like what?”
“Horse riding, school, shopping, and hanging out with my friends.”
“Then my life is a hexagon.” I replied.
“My life must be a triangle.” Evan added.
“Why is your life so small Evan?” I asked.
“Because I only like three things.”
“What are they?”
“Video games, school, and hanging with you two.”
“Liz, why is your life a hexagon?” Jane pondered.
“Because there are six things I like, but the sixth is, er, embarrassing, so I will tell you five.”
“Ok.”
“Shopping, you two, acting, dances, and most important, singing.” I said them so fast that Jane asked me to repeat mine once more.
“Wow, you have some cool things to do, Liz!” Jane shouted.
“Hey, you can do anything you set your mind to.”
“Are they in that order?” Evan questioned.
“Of corse not. This is them in order: Singing, you guys, acting, dances, and shopping.”
“Oh, thanks.” He got a disappointed look on his face, but it didn’t last long. By the time we reached the lobby, his pearly whites shone in the sun light, since the lobby was mostly windows. Jane had a bright smile too. But my teeth were all crocked, so I just had a soft smile. I didn’t like to open my mouth when I still had my baby teeth, because after I lost them, I had normal teeth. But before, my teeth were yellow stained, they were spaced in the front, and crocked in the back. They were one of the things that stopped my face from being considered pretty by other girls. I had golden brown hair, hazel eyes, and a few freckles here and there. I also had stitches, but my bangs covered those.
We reached the office and said bye to each other as we went with our parents. “How was school?” Mom asked.
“It was cool, but I can’t wait until Monday.”
“Why?”
I hesitated a moment. How was I supposed to tell ma, of all people, that Evan was going to tell me if he liked me? “My teacher is reading a new book.”
“Cool.”
The weekend flew by. Monday came as quick as the baseball flying at me during try-outs for softball. I asked Evan if he saw something in his box on Friday.
“No, my box was empty except for the white slip I keep in there.” Evan sounded frustrated. I asked him what was wrong.
“Well, last night my game cube broke!”
“Your still a triangle, right?”
“Yes. I have a DS.”
I felt like I was going to cry. “He didn’t even notice the note! Wait, I can still show him!” I ran over to the boxes. I looked for Evans box. When I found it, I grabbed the note, went to my desk, and shoved it into my reading folder. I would give it to him later. As quick as lightning on a rainy day, I took the note out. Tom ran up to see what I was doing because he was bored.
“What’s this? Let me rea’ that. Evan.....will.....OUT! Ah, I’m givin’ this to him.” Tom was, as usual, smug. I was a little embarrassed when Tom said “This is from Liz.”
The look on his face made me think he would say no. I lost just a small bit of hope. Tom walked back.
“I feel bad for you.”
I opened the note. I lost every bit of regret. He said yes! I noticed that this next to yes:
I was waiting for you to ask!
I could not believe what I was reading. He wanted me the whole time!
“Congratulations, er, guys. I’m happy for you.” Jane said. She had a seemingly sad look.
“I can tell you number six on my hexagon. You, Evan.” I said.
“ I’m a square now.” Evan replied.
Later at recess, an important thing in my life happened. First, Chris Lowe followed us to the rock.
“Ok, huh we gotta make it official. For huh, us to do huh that, you gotta, huh, KISS.” Chris said in his strange voice. He often laughs during speech, so it sounds like he is nervous.
“Ok, I like Evan and all, but I am NOT kissing him now! I mean, look around, just look. There are people here! They will spread rumors!” I complained. Evan gave Chris a look.
“Well, I guess you don’t wanna be together...”
“We’ll do it!”Evan and I shouted. I saw a glimmer in his eyes.
We leaned behind the rock. I was inches away.....
“Hey, What are you doing?” A mystery voice startled me. I looked up to see Carli Griggs with her friends. They had surrounded the rock.
“Leave us be, Carli!”
“Why should I?”
“Because this is a private meeting!”
“Make me leave!”
I stood up and made myself as tall as possible.
“Leave, NOW!!!”
“No way!”
“Dug-outs!”Evan yelled. He grabbed my hand and dragged me into the dugout.
“Lets make this quick, O.K.?”
“O.K.”
We leaned close to each other and we kissed. I can still remember the way I felt afterwards: breathless. When ever I think about it, I can clearly picture it.
