Chapter Five of Our Days As Friends
Chapter Five
The Moment

“Wow. You have some interesting friends, Elizabeth!” Said Grandpa.
“I know, but I want to skip to a very important couple of days. Speaking of couples, there is some romance.” I said “They take place in December.”
I walked into E-10. My birthday was three days ago, and I was still a little jumpy from it.
“Class, open your text books to page ten and answer questions one thru six in your reading notebook. Tear out a page and remember to put your name and the date in the top left corner of your page.” Mrs.Chandler instructed.
“Liz, what’s the date?” Jane asked me.
“December 16, 2005. It’s Friday, incase you forgot.” I whispered.
“No talking during a test. That’s five minutes off your recess, both of you.” Mrs.Chandler scolded us.
“I was talking too, Mrs.Chandler.” Evan said. He winked at us.
“Evan, I’m surprised at you. Take five minutes off your recess, too.”
At recess, we did what we were told. We sat on the stone wall which was meant for children who were missing recess. We had to sit at a distance because if we were tempted to talk, we would have to miss five more minutes on the wall. When five minutes was up, we sprang off the wall and dashed toward the rock, twenty yards away from the wall. “Ok, let us enjoy the last fifteen minutes of recess.” I said, nearly breathless from the dash. Michael Bell, Evans friend, was waiting for us by the rock.
“Finally, I’ve been waiting for you forever! Where were you? Tom told me that you ALWAYS are by the rock!” Michael said.
“Michael, hello! Don’t you have ears? You were siting next to us when Mrs.Chandler said ‘take five minutes off recess!’ DUH!” I said.
“Hey, I wasn’t listening, and please, call me Mike!”
“Why, ‘cause short, like you?” Jane said. “Mike is mini!”
“Stop, ha, teasing . . . ” I broke out laughing. So did everyone who just heard Jane blurt that sentence. I stopped laughing when Mike turned red.
“Stop laughing!” Mike screamed. He ran toward the field.
“Nice move, Jane. Now he’s probably crying because you were so mean.” I scolded her. I always cared about others, so I ran and asked him if he was ok. He said yes, then ran over to tell Tomas Callow what happened.
“Is he all right?” Evan asked.
“Yes, but now he said he will keep is distance from Jane. At least a couple of days, anyway.”
“What did I do? You were laughing too!” Jane said.
“You made fun of him! He almost cried! And I stopped.” I said annoyed.
Then I looked at Evan. I saw him differently this time. I saw something I never saw in him before. This made me feel foolish for not being able to ask him if he liked me at this very moment. A few minutes later the recess whistle pierced the air, and we lined up for class. I was second in line.
“Smooth, Jane. Smooth as silk. Mike was so upset. He almost cried. I’m proud.” Said Tom, dignified that he hadn’t caused the trouble this time.
“Hey! I didn’t mean to make him almost cry!” defended Jane.
