Chapter Eight of Our Days As Friends
Chapter Eight
A Dance Floor
Disappointment

“Hey!”I said.
“Hey.” Evan replied. Hey was like our greeting. “How was your weekend?”
“Great. Yours?”
“Good.”
“I need to ask you something.”
“What?”
“Well, every other Friday, they have a dance at the Boys & Girls club, and I was wondering if you would go with me.”
“Can you give me the address and time?”
“Yes.”
“I’ll ask my dad to take me if he gets home from work on time.”
“Cool! It’s tonight at six on 2 Viking Drive, next to the middle school.”
“I’ll be there.”
I was second in line waiting for the doors to open so I could enter the facility. I heard the DJ just getting ready. Mrs.Sullivan, the director of the B&G club, as I call it, opened the door to let us in. I gave Ellie, owner of B&G, five dollars to enter.
The DJ had just started playing “The Cotton Eyed Joe”, my favorite dance song. I got there just before the dance started. I watched the other people before I started, because I wasn’t that good. I saw the pattern and begun to dance. I was whispering the moves to myself as I noticed I was alternating sides but others were only using their right side.
“Forward, forward, back, back, side, cross, side, cross, four steps right, twirl left, forward, forward, back, back, side, cross, side, cross, four steps right, twirl left. Hey, I’ve got the hang of this!” I began to sing, “Forward, forward, back, back, side, cross, side, cross, four steps right, twirl left, and that’s the Cotton Eyed Joe!” I sang it numerous times until the dance was over.
“One more time, now!” The DJ said. I was nearly breathless from the first time, but did it again anyway. After, I went over to the snack bar and got Peanut M&M’s and a water. I sat and listened to “Laffy Taffy” while I relaxed at the first table, where I planned to meet Evan. When I had ate half of my m&m’s and drank a quarter of my water, the Electric slide came on, so I joined that, because the Cotton Eyed Joe usually came on after it. I did both and then looked at the time. It was seven, so I figured that Evan was in line to get in.
I sat and finished my m&m’s while listening to “I’m Sprung”. Fifteen minutes past and Evan wasn’t here. I remembered how long the line out side gets, so I went over to the snack bar and got two bags of chips: Lays for me and Doritos for Evan. I sat back and ate a few chips. The macarana came on, so I stayed on the out side line so I could see the door. I did the macarana and returned to my seat. Someone had spilt my water, so I grabbed my purse and got a diet coke at the snack bar. I sat at the second table, hoping Evan would arrive soon.
A half an hour past. It was eight o’ clock, so the DJ played slow songs. I really wanted to dance, but no one would ever want to dance with me other than Evan. I waited another half hour. The dance would be over in 45 minutes. The DJ went back to hip-hop and rap. I listened to “1, 2 Step” and sulked. Evan apparently wasn’t coming. I thought I was going to cry. The clock struck 9, and the dance was over for the DJ, but it took an extra half hour to get the kids home. I was third to be picked up.
“How was it?” Mom asked.
“Evan didn’t come. He said he would!” I yelled.
“Oh, calm down. Boys are like that.”
“I knew he was a jerk.” Said Bobby, my younger brother.
We headed home. I felt grief as we drove on.
“How was the dance?” Dad asked.
I didn’t answer. I ran to my room. I started my computer. I typed a letter to Evan. This is what it said:
Hey, you didn’t show at the dance, jerk. You better have a very good explanation for this! If not, we’re through! Not with love, Liz
I clicked send, and started to cry. I was so upset. I jumped into bed and cried myself to sleep. I was sad the whole weekend. I never got a reply from Evan. I called Jane to tell her what happened.
“Jane, remember how I asked Evan to the dance?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, he didn’t show last night!”
“Oh my god, are you ok?”
“A little. I cried a lot last night. I sent him an e-mail. If he doesn’t have a good explanation for this, you can have him because I know for a fact that you liked him too and I happened to get at him before you.”
“Who told you?”
“Your cousin Emily.”
“NO WAY! I told her not to tell. She’s a secret-telling, jerk!”
“I know. She got into big fights with Courtney because she thought that if I was her friend, she was my ONLY friend. Isn’t that dumb?”
“Totally.”
“She did that with Brit, too.”
“I think I know who your talking about, but I wanna be sure.”
“Blackish-brown hair, slight Chinese look, on the heavy side, you remember now, right?”
“Oh, yeah! How did Emily screw this one up?”
“Lies to her, makes her agree with her, basically what she dose to you.”
“That stinks.”
“I bet.”
“Hold on. Yeah, Auntie? Dinner! Ok! Liz I got to go. We’re having dinner.”
“I should too.”
“Ok, bye.”
“Bye.”
I sat down to dinner. I ate and then went back to my room to check my e-mail. I had the usual- An ad for the new features on AIM, and a letter from mom, but nothing from Evan. I went through my digital folder called ‘stuff from evan’. I read all the e-mail he had sent me. I even remembered what order they went in. I started to tear up. So, I closed the program. I was in the middle of typing when I was too tired to type any longer. I sent it and fell asleep.

Wah Wah crying he stood me up! JERK
