Chapter Nine of Our Days As Friends
Chapter Nine
Evan’s Down!

I had anger in my heart from Friday. I got on the bus and sat with my best friend, Destiny. I had known Destiny since she was just turning three, so we are the best of friends, to this very day. Destiny looks up to me in two ways: She is shorter than me, and I inspire her. She always tells me, her mom, and her two older sisters that she wants to be just like me.
“Hey, Dezy. Know what?” I asked Destiny.
“What?” Destiny replied.
“Evan stood me up. That jerk!”
“What does stood up mean?”
“That’s right, your in second this year. You wouldn’t know. Stood up means you promise someone you will go somewhere with them, but then you break your promise.”
“That jerk!”
“I’m gonna tell him off at school today.”
“Don’t be too harsh. He might have had to do something, or maybe his parents said no.”
“I know he lives nearby, so the commute probably wasn’t the problem. It could just be that he’s a jerk.”
“Lizzie, did you notice we’re at school, and it’s snowing pretty hard.”
“I know. I’ll walk you to class so we can talk a little longer. The snow will probably clear up sooner or later.”
“You really think so? I think it’s going to snow all night.”
“Oh, Yeah?” I sniff the air twice. “Smells like a bet to me.”
“Ok, you pick odds this time.”
Me and Dez make bets all the time. We take turns picking odds.
“If I win, you owe me... let’s see... a, a sleep over, and if you win, I’ll give you, 50 cents , fair?”
“Make it 1 dollar, and you got a deal.”
“Deal.”
We shook hands. The deal was struck. We reached Dezy’s classroom, and I headed to room E10. I was 2 minutes late, but Mrs.Chandler didn’t mind.
“Hey, Where’s Ev?” I asked Jane.
“I think he’s absent today, why?”
“That jerk stood me up on Friday!”
“You told me.”
“If he doesn’t a have better explanation than ‘I forgot’, I’ll break up with him.”
“Go easy on him. He’s still only 10.”
“I’m older, though. I’m 11 already, I can handle a break-up. I’ve had 2.”
“I thought you only dated Chris! Before he moved, I mean.”
“I actually never broke up with him. He just left.”
“Ohhhh! Your cheating! You can’t have two boyfriends!”
“I know he isn’t coming back, so I don’t have to worry.”
“What about your first break up! Was that real?”
“Of corse. My first break-up was with a h-o-t hot guy. I wouldn’t cheat with him.”
“So, what was his name?”
“I called him Harry. His name was Harold.”
“What’s his last name?”
“I don’t amember!”
“What he look like?”
“Hot. Cool. Popular. Brownish-gold hair.”
“Total Hottie, huh?”
“Yup.”
“Class, Take your seats! Begin the assignment on the board.” Mrs.Chandler announced.
I sat at my chair. Mike was sitting in Evan’s spot. Jane was sitting in Mike’s seat.
“Liz, get in my spot!” Jane whispered.
“Why?” I replied.
“Today we sit in different spots! Mrs.Chandler said so!”
“Oh, ok.”
I took Jane’s seat. I pulled out my reading folder. Wait, why was my folder in Jane’s desk?
“Jane, why are we in each others spots?”
“Mrs.Chandler switched the desks around yesterday.”
That explained a lot. “Ok.”

“Ok, why did Mrs.Chaseler change your seats?” Grampa asked.
“Number one: Her name is Mrs.CHANDLER! CHAN-DL-ER! Two: She switched them because I talked to Jane too much in class.”

When Mr.Southam announced busses, I ran for my bus. If I didn’t run, Chris Lowe would have sat with me. I made it before him and sat next to Brittany, Destiny’s older sister.
“Hey, Brit.” I said, catching my breath.
“I heard about Evan. Is he, I mean, are you, uhh...” Brit seemed confused.
“He wasn’t at school, so I’m not single yet.”
“Oh.”
“Mind if I sit here, too?”
I looked over and saw Chris Lowe’s sister, the back-stabber herself. Emily Lowe.
“I don’t think that’s such a good idea to have three fat people in one seat.” I smartly replied.
“Liz, your not fat. Your only one thir..”
“One thirty-five, I get it! That’s fat for me.”
“Hey, at least your not two somthin’ like me!” Brit almost shouted. Brit is usually quiet and shy.
“Brit, calm down! You don’t want him to hear, do you?” I whispered loudly. Him, A.K.A. Josh, was in the seat behind us. Brittany had a gigantic crush on him, and she told him she was one seventy-five. He believed her, and would never talk to Brit again if he knew she was lying.
“Brit, I’m 178, that’s close.” Emily lied. Emily was actually 187.
“Hey, what’d ya say, Brit?” Josh asked.
“She was teaching us a line from her play, yeah, about a young girl with a medical problem.” I was a smooth liar when I wanted to be.
“Oh, well said, Brit. When is the play?”
I thought for about three seconds. “The play was last Friday at the Church. You missed it.”
“Man! I like plays about sick people, too!”
“TAKE YOUR SEATS!” The intercom on the bus rang.
Emily got in the seat with her brother. Brittany and I continued talking.
“Smooth, Liz! Thanks a lot! You really saved me there!” Brit said, relieved.
“Glad I could help.”
“No, really, thanks.”
Destiny stood. “Lizzie!” She called.
“What?” I replied.
Dez sniffed the air twice, imitating me from earlier. “I smell you losing the bet!”
“Why?”
“Look out the window!”
I looked. It was still snowing. “The snow has slowed!” I indicated.
“Yeah, by two seconds!”
“Stop it, you two!” The bus driver buzzed. The bus driver didn’t allow screaming on her bus. It said so on her list of bus behavior rules.
“What bet?” Brit asked.
“Long story. Can’t tell you.” I replied.
“No secrets!” Brit protested.
“Ok! Me and Dezy made a bet that if it snowed all night, I owe her a dollar. If I win, you guys have to through a sleep over party for me and you girls, happy now?”
“Yes, thank you.”
It was a long ride home as the bus driver maneuvered around three-foot snow banks.
When we arrived, I stepped off the bus and into a two foot pile of snow. As I dug my feet out of the snow, I saw a box buried in deep. I frantically dug around it, my bare hands freezing. When I finally pulled it up, I read the name and address. It was from Evan! When my brother stepped off the bus, I read the note inside to him aloud.
“Dear Liz, I was hopping you aren’t too mad at me for missing your dance. I want to make it up to you. Inside this box is a picture, apology note, and a doctors note. Please take them seriously. They aren’t fake. Evan.” I read.
“What? Leme see that.” Bud took the box and put it on the floor in the house. We dug around until all the items mentioned were on the floor in front of us. I looked at the picture first. I couldn’t believe what was in view. Evan was on crutches and a cast was wrapped around his left ankle. Evan broke his ankle! Next, I looked at the doctors note. It was a copy, but it was real all the same. I saw a familiar signature at the bottom. Years ago, when I was three, I saw the same doctor! I wondered if Evan fell out of the same tree I did. Any way, I continued to the apology note. I read it to myself.
Dear Elizabeth, I missed the dance last night for a reason. As seen in the picture, I’ve broken my ankle, and was in the hospital all last night. I hope your not too mad. I will be back in school in a week, I hope. If your wondering how this package got to your house so quickly, my friend lives on this street and he showed me where you lived. Any way, I heard you were kinda mad about me missing the dance. He told me first you sulked around, then you got a little mad. Sorry and still caring about you, Evan.
I read the note aloud to my brother.
“Who’s his friend?” Bud asked.
“You tell me! There’s only one person on our street I saw at the dance and that’s....” I paused, suddenly knowing who it was. “Zack.”
