“Oh my god, Liz! Remember me? Allana?” She said.
“O M G Allana! How are you?”
“Good. I missed you! I had to switch schools because I moved.”
“I missed you too. No wonder I never saw you around Decas!”
“Yeah. You look good now. Lose some weight?”
“Dropped a couple pounds. You look like you’ve lost a little too. And your hairs longer.”
“Yeah, I grew it out. Yours looks a little shorter...”
“Students, line up for lunch!” Ms. Snider yelled. “This line is soup, these two lines are sandwich, this line is hot lunch, and that line is salad! Hot lunch is ravioli! The sandwich lines are serving chicken paddy!”
“I feel like soup today.” I said.
“I’m gonna get chicken paddy!” Allana exclaimed. She stopped and grabbed me. “Liz?”
“What?”
“Have you met Kevin?”
“Kevin who?”
“Kevin O’Brien?”
“No.”
“Oh my god you haven’t? He’s the Chicken God! Kevin!”
A boy turned around. He looked a little short for his age and he was black. So was his clothing. He walked over.
“Sup Allana?” He said. He put his fist out.
“Liz, this is our corny hand shake.” Allana punched his fist. Then they flipped their wrists and punched again. Then the flipped their wrists again and made the peace sign and punched. Allana and Kevin laughed.
“Lana, who’s your friend?” Kevin asked.
“Her name’s Elizabeth but we call her Liz. She’s the one I was talkin bout, remember?” Allana said.
“Oh yeah! The one with the Cho-cho doll!” He said.
“Umm, I got rid of that a long time ago.” I said.
“Aww, you should have given it to me!” Allana said.
“Sorry, but I didn’t have your new number and I tried to call but it said your phone was disconnected!” I said.
“Hey, you three, get in line!” Mrs. Snider yelled. I got in the soup line and Kevin and Allana got in the chicken paddy line. I got my milk and tray. Today’s soup was chicken noodle with a bagel and cream cheese.
“Hey, I know you!” the cashier said. “Liz, how are ya? Remember me? Andy?”
“Oh, hi Andy! I’m fine.” I replied. Andy was one of my moms friends.
“Ok, hun, you owe $16 from last year.” she said. “Do you have money?”
“Yup. Let me find it, hang on.” I dug around in my purse. “Here.” I handed her a check.
“$30 dollars, ok, so now you have $12 left. Tell your mom I said hi!” she called.
“Ok!” I yelled back.
I went to the lunch table. Allana and Kevin were already there. I looked at the table. I recognized the faces of Anna Richards, Marina Newbert, Tom Callow, Amonty Amado, Brett Labonte’ and Marisa Chambers. I didn’t get along with Amonty or Brett. Tom and Marisa were ok. Marina and Anna were my friends.
“Liz, sit here!” Allana yelled.
“No, sit with Brett!” Another girl called.
“I think you should sit with Forest!” A different girl yelled.
“Sit with Amonty!” Brett yelled.
“No way, I ain’t sittin with Tricycle!” Amonty yelled. Every one laughed.
“Its Treichel! Ter - I - kle! Treichel!” I said.
“Oh, whats Ter - I - kle gonna do about it?” Amonty asked. More laughs.
“Shut up Amonty!” Allana yelled. “Liz, just sit here.”
“Ok.” I said.
“Are you ok?” Allana asked.
“Yeah. Being picked on is a daily thing for me.” I sighed.
“Well, what ARE you gonna do about it?”
“Telling on them gets me nowhere, and I can’t risk getting suspended for beating them up, and when I ignore them, they find ways to make me notice them.”
“Pick on them back!”
“That don’t work either.”
“Damn, what do you have to do to get them to leave you alone?”
“Kill them?” Kevin suggested.
“I’m not going to Juvenile Hall because people pick on me.” I said.
“I was kidding!” Kevin said. “Jeze, can’t you take a joke?”
“Yes. But still, killing them? What kind of solution is that?”
“A good one.” Allana joked. We laughed.
“Ok, on a better note, we’re gonna have a great year, right?” I said.
“Yeah!” Kevin and Allana said.
“Do you guy swear?” I asked.
“******** yeah!” Allana said.
“A little.” Kevin said. We laughed.
“Well, were all gonna laugh our asses off, right!”
“******** YEAHR!” Allana screamed. The cafeteria went quiet. A teacher walked up to the table.
“Young lady, do you just swear?” The teacher asked. I looked at his name tag. Mr. Oliver.
“Um, no, it was her.” she pointed at a girl with long black hair. She had told me earlier to sit with Brett.
“Whats her name?” Mr. Oliver asked.
“Kelsey Fagan.” Allana replied. Mr. Oliver approached Kelsey. I listened with anticipation.
“Ms. Fagan! Come with me RIGHT NOW!” Mr. Oliver yelled. We all giggled as Kelsey was dragged into the hallway.
“That was sooo ******** funny!” Allana said.
“Is ******** your favorite word or sometin?” I asked.
“Yes.” Kevin answered for her. “She says it all the time. She also likes b***h.”
“She’s a b***h?”
“I AM NOT!” Allana yelled.
“Ok, ok, I was kiddin! And I can’t take a joke? Wow.”
“I also like to call people lazy asses. Watch.” She turned around. “Amonty! Get off your lazy a** and go play in traffic!”
“Shut up Fagana.” Amonty said. No laughs. Not even an “Ouuu!” came from either table. Then me and Kevin cracked up.
“Wow Amonty that was sooo lame!” Allana yelled.
“Dude, that was sooo damn funny! Nice one!” I said.
“It’s a gift.”
