The Book Of Remembrance and Forgetting
Hopefully, mostly remembrance. My New Year's Resolution this year was to keep a journal...this isn't exactly a chronicle of my exploits (though at times it becomes such) as a stream-of-conciousness narrative. Enjoy.
Zort! It's Kayla the Djinni!
An RP character based on one of my real life friends ( wink I know you'll read this eventually!) that sort of took off on her own little dimension. Extremely long bio- phew!
Edit: Finished now, included totally true personality. (Again for real Kayla: Every word, every word is true and you know it! Oops, forgot to mention OCD artist bit. Nvm, I'll leave that detail out. biggrin )
I love a character I can write for like this. Now I just need an rp of suitable genre and quality...

Name: Kayla Fasworth
Age: Appears 18, but really 342
Race: Djinni
Powers: Kayla can use her flute to cast spells. It channels power and is imbued with some of its own, but major magical undertakings require energy, either her own or drawn from plants and animals within a three-foot radius around her. She can also grant wishes, like all djinn, but the energy for that comes from the wisher. (Obviously, she cannot grant her own wishes.)
Bio: Kayla was second of four children. Her parents, Avra Mohney and Varinos Fasworth, were country djinn. They had a farm and animals (chickens and pigs, mostly, with a few cows and one horse). Occaisionally, one of the villagers would come to them for something- a cure for a disease, or perhaps food to get through the winter- and Avra and Varinos would grant it for free. The one thing they wouldn’t do was grant wishes for gold, but the villagers in the main were simple folk and had no need of such things. However, a family of djinn does not live too long in one place without news of their doings reaching the ears of the high and mighty. And, inevitably, when the high and mighty are denied, tragedy occurs. A knight was passing through the village on his way back to his lord’s castle after a spell on border duty, and he stopped to buy supplies for the last part of the journey. He overheard a fruitseller and a customer discussing the Fasworth family. The knight was curious about these people who ‘fixed up my little boy’s sickness right quick, and didn’t charge a cent for it neither!’ He inquired about the Fasworths and got directions to their farm.
In typical sneaky, villainous fashion he didn’t declare his presence, choosing instead to lurk in the bushes. It was from that vantage point that he observed Gatvin, Kayla’s older brother, practicing. Gatvin’s particular power involved use of a hammer, through which he channeled his spells. So when the knight watched, he saw a boy of about ten or twelve years sitting in the grass and tapping a large hammer on a slowly growing pile of grain. Gatvin was, obviously, not very advanced, and could only conjure so much at once. But the flow of grain that slid down the sides of the pile with each hammer tap was very much evident to the watching knight, and he watched with growing wonder.
Several weeks later, he arrived back at the castle with news for his lord. And, naturally, the lord gathered up his forces and led them out to the village where the Fasworths lived. He knocked on their door, which was opened by Avra. He proceeded to demand that she conjure gold, but of course Avra refused. When he raised his voice to her, Varinos emerged from another room and came to back his wife up. The lord was forced to back down, in particular because Varinos casually suggested that he might set every one of the strangers on fire unless they did. But he did not give up, this greedy lord. He made a plan, and sent for Quarto.
Quarto is a spy, who at that time worked for the unnamed lord. Of elven blood, Quarto was at that time young (relatively speaking), in his mid thirties. But he was a criminal born, an expert at going places and doing things that were not necessarily legal. And so he snuck into the Fasworth house and lifted a sleeping Gatvin from his bed. The next morning, when the rest of the family awoke, their son and brother was already far away and en route to the castle. Instead of mounting a probably fruitless pursuit and attack, they packed up and left, moving away to a safer place.
Years later, Kayla heard the whole story of her brother’s dissappearance for the first time. She was in her early twenties at the time, old enough to venture out on her own, and venture she did. Predictably, she wanted to find her brother, of whom she had fond memories. So she set out, backtracking first to her old hometown, then following Quarto’s path from there. She never did catch up to him, but along the way found an old man who told her of a man, “Carrying a hammer like his most prized posession and a weepin’ like you wouldn’t believe. Said he was lost, like, and did I know where his family had gone?” It was Gatvin, of course, wandering the countryside in search of his kin. Sadly, that was the last Kayla heard of him. The trail went cold after that, though she continued to search for some years. Eventually, she resigned herself to the fact that her brother was lost, and became simply a wanderer. Along the way and through the years she honed her powers and fought a war, though she doesn’t like to talk about it much. She also befriended a phoenix by the name of Revenir, who sometimes travels with her. (Kayla likes to call him Rainbow, and for some reason he tolerates this- though if anyone else tried it he most likely would attack them.)
Personality: Even after 342 years of life, Kayla is still astoundingly quirky and volatile. She see-saws between seriousness, playfulness, and bouts of uncontrollable laughter. In general, however, she is lighthearted. She loves to tease people, and takes great pleasure in causing confusion. She’s had a lot of free time- perhaps too much, if you talk to someone who knows her well- and as a result has developed her own language. In fact, she’s invented two, both written and spoken, with their own grammar systems. Whenever she has a thought or an idea that she’d rather other people not understand, she uses one of these.
She is a perfectionist, and has a tendency to be unnecesairily self-deprecating. Despite her prolific imagination and quick mind, she likes to downplay her own intelligence. At the same time, however, she can easily utter paragraphs that are so filled with esoteric detail and vocabulary that whoever she is speaking to can only blink at her and ask, “What was that again?” She loves music, and will often finger songs on her flute- even when she isn’t acutally holding her flute. Fingers in dancing in midair in front of her is not exactly an uncommon sight, and the sound of her humming some new song is not an uncommon sound.

Appearance:

Weapons: Mostly her flute, though she’s picked up a few hand-to-hand and knife tricks in her travels. Don’t give her a sword, though, unless you fancy getting impaled. She’s hopeless with long blades, and trips over bowstrings. Close fighting or long-distance magic are her main combat skills.
