Future Bonds Chapter 1: My Brother, His Experiment, and Me.

Today I add another entry into my journal, a black leather bound book with about half of the pages filled and the others blank waiting for my words.

May 23, 1783, My bother Saki and I will turn 18 this year in a few days. I still haven’t decided what to buy for Saki. What do I get for a brother, who seems to have everything or can create it? I can’t believe everything we have gone through, mainly due to Saki’s experiments gone astray, but despite all that we are still here…We are still alive…

I found myself saying the words out loud as I wrote, but Saki was fast asleep at his workbench and didn’t stir the slightest. I pondered over the gift for Saki and even wrote a few things down on one of the pages of my journal, but none of them seemed right. Last year I bought Saki a rare, and beautiful, bird called a Phoenix that is said to cure any illness and protect its master from harm. Saki took a few of the feathers that had fallen off of it and made an alcoholic drink with them. Saki calls it the “Flaming Ale” and to this day, Saki is the only one I’ve seen that can drink a whole glass and not pass out from it. The Phoenix feathers really do give the drink a magical healing power, but most have deemed the “side-effects” of losing consciousness, and strange behavior such as slurred speech and staggering, to be too much of a risk of their health and safety that Saki lost 99% of his patients that week…The remaining 1% being himself, who now only drinks the Flaming Ale on winter nights as a “way of warming the soul” or so Saki says.

No thoughts came to mind, so I closed my journal and returned it to my hiding spot amongst all of Saki’s books. From a distance it looked just like a regular book up on the bookshelf. On occasion I’d place it in a different spot on the shelf, or switch it with a regular book, just to test brother. If it was moved from its spot I could tell brother was snooping. “Saiken…what are you doing over there?” I heard a familiar voice call out to me. “Nothing, brother.” I answered quickly as I turned to face Saki, who looked completely refreshed from his mid-day nap. “…and call me Sai.” I said annoyed at the fact brother used my full name just to tease me. “Yes, yes. So Sai…I was thinking that we could go over to the market today. Cyani needs to get out for alittle while.” Saki said with a pleating look in his eyes. Cyani huh…More like brother needs to get out. Cyani is a creature brother made in one of his experiments. Cyani looks like a skinny rabbit, with a long white tail about the same lengh as one of her ears.. Brother takes her everywhere in a shoulder bag. “Sai are you listening? I want to take Cyani to the market today. Can I?” Saki said a little louder, snapping me out of my daydream. “Sure…Why not? Just don’t let people see her okay?” I said and Saki suddenly became overjoyed as he spun around with Cyani in his hands.

That’s how I wound up going to the market with my brother and Cyani. I thought for once Saki and I would have a normal day…Just get what we needed and return back to the house, and Saki and Cyani would go back to the basement, but that would never happen…at least not today. Saki was at one of the venders deciding on if to get green apples or red ones for his home-made apple pie, when suddenly a strange looking boy came out of nowhere and ran right into Saki, knocking him to the ground and the shoulder bag with Cyani in it went sliding across the floor. I quickly dived for the bag and brought it on my shoulder before Cyani had a chance to escape then I helped Saki up to his feet. “Kid, What’s your problem? Why did you run into Saki for?” I said glaring down at him. “Sai, easy. Are you okay?” Saki said as if he completely forgot he was just knocked to the floor a moment ago. I watched surprised as Saki helped the strange kid to his feet. Suddenly Cyani jumped out of the bag and right into the kid’s arms. I watched baffled as Cyani cuddled up to him and licked his hand. “She likes you.” Saki said smiling. “What is she?” the boy said in between laughs. “Cyani and I’m Saki…that is Sai my younger brother.” Saki said politely. “I’m Kiryo. Nice to meet ya.” The boy said smiling widely. “Kiryo…means traveler yes.” Saki said and the boy nodded. “Interesting. Hey Sai can he come home with us? Cyani really likes him.” Saki said again with those pleating eyes. “Why not…the more the merrier.” I said with no idea of what I was getting myself into…
