DH, Sunday 21 Nov 2004, night

I just had to deal with a bout of French homework. For anyone who doesn't know (which is mostly everyone), I hate my French homework. Don't get me wrong, I love the language, but my book is a piece of--pardon my French--merde.

Aside from being written by a very strange person, the assignments are completely and utterly mindless. I always hate busy work, and when I am told to "Complete according to the cues," or to identify if the picture is of a telephone or a television, I just get annoyed. Of course, the worst is so mind-numbingly stupid that I start to question the wisdom of three years of French.

Repondez par <<oui>>. Answer with "yes." This is even worse when you see the questions they give you with it. "Claudine washed her face?" "Robert went to the post office?" "Murasaki is ready to shoot herself?"

I don't get how they expect us to understand "reciprocal structure" when they don't expect us to know how to assemble a basic sentence.

When I see these, I wonder what would happen if I said no. Or a possible maybe. But of course I respond with yes. Resistence is futile. 2+2=5. "Yes, Claudine washed her face."

I think that I will respond with no someday. I will say: "No, Claudine is a filthy pig that never washes her face." "No, Robert went to the mailbox down the street instead." "No, Murasaki is actually having fun with this."

I should try that sometime.
