Love in Magic By Megan Hanks There he is again. Oh, just look at him! He’s so perfect. If only he would turn my way, actually look at me. But that’ll never happen, thought Avera as she sighed. She knew that no matter how hard she tried Garian wouldn’t ever take notice of her. She was just another person, another girl standing in the way. Plus she wasn’t too popular, so she would always be another fangirl who swooned at the sight of him but never tried to talk or ask him out. Avera sighed again, why did life have to be so difficult? Why did she have to love the one person she knew everyone loved, the one that could never and would never go out with her? “Hey why the long face? Hmmm?” a voice asked penetrating her thoughts. She looked up into bright green eyes that glowed with a hint of mischief. Here was Avera’s best friend, Kyanna, who normally didn’t have a care in the world. Avera had always envied her openness and the way she was able to get you to say what she wanted to hear. Her short vibrant red hair, tan skin tone, and narrow face made her seem, aside from being a half-fox demon, like a fox. Something told Avera that she was up to something. Raising her head to look around the class Kyanna spotted the thing Avera had been obsessing over. “Oh no don’t tell me you’re thinking about Garian again!” she said at Avera’s sudden blushing. “He probably doesn’t even know that you exist! Why can’t you just find someone else? There are a million of guys at this school other than him. So come on why not give someone else a chance?” “No one I can find in this school is more perfect,” Avera said. This talk was familiar to them both. She would give the facts and Kyanna would try to get her to give up on him. In the end, she won only because of her stubbornness; she refused to let him go. “Well if that’s how you’re going to be fine,” Kyanna’s reply was expected but made Avera think even more that she was up to something. Kyanna shouldn’t have given in that easily unless she was realizing that she would never win. “But that means I get the new guy!” “What?! There’s a new guy at our school again?!” was Avera’s shocked reply. New guys seemed to come to their school regularly in the past couple of days. Why? She couldn’t guess; but it was growing old. “What do you mean “what”! It’s exactly as I just said there is a new guy at our school and he is drop dead gorgeous!” Kyanna said those last few words rolling her eyes. “Oh my god there he is! Look at him isn’t he cute? This is so great I didn’t think he would be in our class. We’re so lucky!!! I wonder what his name is? Hey where do you think he’s from?” Avera knew by now that she would keep that up till the teacher told everyone to be quiet. The most she could do now was just let her keep going and get it out of her system. In the mean time she decided that she would try to get a better look at the new guy. He had just walked in the door and already she could see quite a few girls looking at him. Though she couldn’t blame them he was cute. He had shoulder length hair the color of sunlight. He had high cheekbones and eyes that were slightly slanted. His eyes were a stunning shade of blue and were taking in all of his current surroundings. He was wearing a tight maroon shirt that showed a fit body with a loose fitting pair of pants. Right after he entered the room the teacher followed telling everyone to get into their seats. Kyanna whispered into her ear, “Now are you willing to get over Garian?” as she got up and moved over to her seat. Avera shook her head a little but inside she knew that was a lie, she liked him and agreed with Kyanna. She couldn’t tell Kyanna though because she didn’t want to give her the satisfaction. “All right, everyone as you can see we have a new student,” the teacher began. “Now I want you to be nice, and welcome him. Now why don’t you tell us a little about yourself?” she asked sitting down at her desk, but still keeping her full attention on him. “There isn’t much to tell,” he stated. His eyes were scanning the room, for what Avera couldn’t tell. “I used to live far away from here in the mountains,” he continued. His eyes then caught Avera’s. He held her gaze, but continued to talk to the rest of the class, “My parents decided to send me to a better school so I could get a better education.” Suddenly the room shifted in her mind, and Avera was sucked into a place, a room, she had never seen before. Though she admitted it did seem familiar. You don’t even know where you are. How the hell are you supposed to help me? “Huh? Who’s there?” Avera said spinning wildly around in a circle to see who had spoken, the voice to her had seemed to come from every where. Once she had stopped spinning he came out of the shadows, the new guy was right in front of her. “Aahh!” was Avera’s startled response. She jumped back a ways. He just chuckled a little. She couldn’t tell if it was at her or something she did but it made her very mad. “Hey! Listen up jerk, I may not know where I am, but that means you do so where have you taken me,” She half-shouted at him. The apparent shock spread across his face for a moment then was gone. He answered her with silence, which was not an answer she was going to take. “You better tell me or I swear upon everything that is holy you will regret it,” she stated quite boldly. “You’re just scared aren’t you?” he asked clearly making fun of her, that or trying to get her to freak out or something to find out what she was thinking. Suddenly she felt him searching her mind. Just as quickly she put up walls without thinking in her mind to get him out. “Uh-,” he started as this happened. “Well, I give them credit you’re not a coward. How did you know to do that?” he asked, with what she hoped was admiration and curiosity. “Umm, well, I just imagined walls going up in my mind that pushed you out of my head,” she said a little shaken. What is going on here? She wondered to herself. “Well, maybe you will come in handy. Oh by the way, it might help if you pay attention to class now,” he said smugly. “Hmm? Wait, what do you-” she started to say when suddenly the room around her began to shift and change. She blinked and came to, she was back in her desk, in the classroom, and the teacher was getting up because the new boy had finished talking obviously. What just happened to me, she wondered to herself. “Thank you very much…um…I don’t believe you told us your name,” the teacher stated. Yeah, he didn’t mention it to me either Avera thought to herself. “Oh really,” he says in a lazy voice, “How silly of me, it’s Yinoi.”
