"I thought you learned better by now, Alice," Tetsuia said levelly as he stared across his desk, his nose twitching in distaste. Sitting in his office was Alice who was sporting a red handprint on her face and a noxious scent coming from her charred blonde hair.

The ten year old stiffened, her azure eyes previously triumphant now penetrating. "I didn't start anything!" Her index finger jutted towards the door, "That ass slapped me when her ego couldn't accept being wrong, and when I proved I can give as good as I got, she sent a ray of fire at me!" She stomped the ground with her shoe onto the hardwood and crossed her arms. Her eyes then darted to the side, her lips forming an indulgent grin. "But ohhh was she shocked when I did what you showed me and sent it right back at h-"

"I wasn't talking about the fight. That, you handled well," Tetsuia interrupted as he glanced at her blackened hair, "I was talking about how you ended up fighting in the first place."

The blonde pouted, her legs lightly swinging back and forth in impatience. "She was showing off, talking about how anti-magic fields couldn't be deconstructed from the inside. And.." She hesitated for a half-second before nodding her head, "I explained to her why she was wrong."

"You were being condescending again."

"No! I wa-"

"Stop. Don't say you weren't. And -" he held a hand up as Alice opened her mouth, "No, let me finish."

"You spoke to her as though you were above her," Tetsuia said, "As if being more knowledgeable gave you the right..." He leveled a cool stare at the girl, "to treat her like she was lesser - like she was garbage."

The two stared at each other for a good while, the ticking of the grandfather clock filling the uncomfortable silence. Experience bore true once more, and the ten-year old broke eye contact first.

"She was the one who couldn't handle logic and facts," she grumbled quietly as she lowered her head, "I was right on all counts." The girl grimaced faintly at how petulant she sounded.

The archmage chuckled. "Considering how much you complain about it, I'm surprised you haven't learned it by now." Tetsuia smirked malevolently as she glared. "Humans are illogical creatures. No matter how much we want to deny it, we are not driven by logic but by emotion."

"Look, I know that we use emotion as a foci, but it's the l-"

Tetsuia shook his head.

"I'm not speaking about magic. I'm speaking about humans as a whole, as a species." Placing a hand on his chest, he continued. "We are at our core emotional creatures. We revel in happiness. We seek comfort in sadness - whether it be with others or in solitude. And we hold grudges deeper than the ocean."

The girl glared at her mentor and leaned forward. She said defiantly, "I'm not like that."

The man raised an eyebrow, amused. "Oh you're not? What drove you then to continue your argument? You said your piece. Why didn't you leave when she refused to listen?" He smirked, "After all, I do it to you all the time and watch, with great humor might I add, when those trees bear fruit."

Face reddening, Alice silently stewed in embarrassment.

Struggling not to laugh, Tetsuia kept his mouth shut for the sake of keeping the conversation productive. Only when he trusted himself not to break out in laughter did he again continue, "You are a very prideful person, Alice. And I'm not saying it is a bad thing. But even now, after I pointed out the possibility that you were in the wrong, you are feeling resentment - and possibly trying to find a way to get even."

"N-"

"And it's normal," Tetsuia interrupted, "You are not the only one who feels that way; after all, am I not human too?" The man could only smile as he watched her visibly stop herself from flinging an insult. So adorable.

"Humans are prideful. And when we argue, we are there to win it," Tetsuia continued on, "regardless of facts and logical reasoning."

"In fact, it is illogical to believe that humans, emotional creatures that we are, would respond well to logic." He rested his cheek against his hand, "It is much like carrying a knife to a gun fight: yes there is an off chance it will work, but... you'll probably just end up shot."

"...Then what do I do?" the ten-year old said, her swinging heels bumping into the chair she sat on.

Tetsuia bared his teeth in a grin. "You think I'm going to answer that? Remember, knowledge ea-"

"Knowledge earned is worthwhiler than knowledge given, I know I know." the blonde said with a disgruntled frown and stood up from the chair, knowing that their conversation was at its end.

As Alice headed towards the door, Tetsuia opened his mouth to say something before shaking his head. Once the door locked shut, the archmage smirked mirthfully as he went back to work.
