Chapter 1
Walking home from her fourth day of American school Lucy decided to stop at the local jewelry store. When she got there the store had a sign on it reading “Clearance Sale! Everything must go!” Lucy walked in and said hello to the owner. She looked around a little and found this beautiful red velvet choker necklace with a blue stone on it. “Wow this is beautiful! How much is it?” she asked the shopkeeper in her thick British accent. She knew it made her stick out like a sore thumb, especially in her new home on Long Island, but she couldn’t do anything about it.
“That is fifty dollars” the shopkeeper replied.
“I don’t think I have that kind of money ma’am” Lucy said sadly.
“Well this is a clearance sale so I guess I can give it to you for, let’s say, fifteen dollars?”
“That’s perfect thank you!” Lucy took the choker over to the cash register and paid for it. As she did so the shopkeeper said “You know that necklace was found in an archeological dig in Egypt. They think it might be thousands of years old, too bad it’s useless.”
“Whoa! Thank you again!” Lucy left the store and headed home.
She went inside using her key and went upstairs into her room. She went to the mirror and put on the necklace. Lucy looked at it on her in the mirror; it looked good with her shoulder length brown hair, blue eyes and pale British skin. She put down her backpack and went back downstairs. Just as she was about to make herself a snack there was a pounding at the door.
“LUCY! LUCY YOU IN THERE? I FORGOT MY KEY AGAIN!” said a voice with an equally thick accent.
“HOLD ON!” Lucy walked over and let her little sister in. “How many times are you gonna forget it? Lilly, this is the bloody fourth time this week!”
“My god, calm down sis don’t get your knickers in a twist!” Lilly replied grabbing a bag of chips from the kitchen and plopping on the couch.
“Fine, but who knows next time I might not be here.” Lucy warned.
“Oh please, like you’ve made any mates already!” Lilly argued.
This was a sensitive subject with Lucy. They had been in America for a week already and she hadn’t made any friends yet. Well, there was one girl in her homeroom named Isabella who seemed nice, but Lucy was to shy to go talk to her. There was also this boy in her advanced chemistry class who she really liked, his name was Max, but there was the same issue of shyness. Lucy stormed up to her room and lay on her bed. As she laid there a scratching came from the door. It was probably Mittens, Lucy’s kitten that her parents gave her when they first moved here. She went over, opened the door and picked up the little kitten.
“When is this lady gonna feed me?” some one said.
“Who said that?” Lucy asked looking around her room.
“Human, if you can hear me nod your head,” the voice said. Lucy nodded her head continuing to look around. “This is impossible!”
“Who’s there? I demand to know!” Lucy yelled.
“It is I speaking you silly girl, some how you seem to be able to understand me.” Lucy looked down at Mittens. “Yes me! Now would you mind getting me some food? Maybe tuna?”
“No, this can not be happening! I, I must have fallen asleep. That’s it! This is all just a dream!” Lucy proclaimed. The kitten reached up and scratched Lucy’s arm. “Ouch, that hurt! Wait that hurt?”
Chapter 2
As Izzy walked home from the pet store with her new pet mouse she tried not to think of what Saturday was. It was the reading of her grandmothers will. Izzy missed her so much that even thinking of her now brought tears to her eyes. Her mom already gave her something that was left for her, a simple red velvet choker necklace with a yellow jewel in the middle. Her grandmother had found it at one of her archeological digs in Egypt.
When Izzy got home she went up to her room to be alone, but she found her new stepbrother, Frank, going through her stuff.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” Izzy yelled at him.
“Oh hello Isabella, I’m not doing anything. That is except looking for this!” Frank said pulling a picture of Izzy’s grandmother out from behind his back.
“GIVE THAT BACK!” Izzy screamed.
“You want it? You gotta jump for it!” Frank said holding the picture above Izzy’s head. Frank was a bit taller then her so he had the advantage.
“I SAID GIVE THAT BACK TO ME, YOU FAT JERK!” Izzy screamed again.
“I AM NOT FAT!!! I’M BIG BONED!!!” Frank screamed throwing the picture down. It broke with glass shattering everywhere.
“YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE DONE THAT! STEPBROTHER OR NOT I’M GONNA KILL YOU!” Izzy screamed. All of a sudden everything went red.
“You’re… you’re eyes… they’re… they’re on fire!” Frank said freaking out. Izzy went over to her mirror and saw that it was true. Her eyes had been replaced with fireballs.
“OH MY GOD, WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING TO ME!?!” Izzy screamed. She looked down at the broken picture and sank down crying. Her tears returned her eyes to normal by extinguishing the fires.
Chapter 3
Max was in the woods with a couple of his skater friends.
“Hey Max! I dare you to jump that dead tree over there!” one of the guys yelled.
“No thanks I’d rather not snap my neck,” Max yelled back in a matter of fact way.
“Oh right we forgot Richie Rich doesn’t wanna waste his money on medical bills!” another guy yelled.
“Or he’s just a wittle baby!” a different boy yelled in a baby voice and sucking his thumb.
“Quit it guys!” Max yelled back at them. All of the guys started laughing but they were silenced by a distant howl.
“What was that?” a boy asked nervously.
“I bet it was a wolf! Let’s get out of here!” another said running away. All of the boys followed suit and ran. That was except Max, he was too paralyzed with fear to get away. In the distance he saw some dog like animal coming nearer. It came towards and dropped something at his feet. Max bent down and picked it up. He realized that this animal was no wolf. Instead it was a jackal, he had learned about them in social studies in the ancient Egypt chapter. Max looked at the object in his hand. It looked like a red wrist band with a black stone on it.
“Are you the human they call Max?” the jackal asked him.
“Yes…” Max answered. The jackal then just ran away. “Wait! Come back! How do you know my name… and how can you talk?!?” Max looked at the wrist band and put it on. It was obviously something important and was given to him for a reason.
