Chapter 1: Jessica
I tapped my fingers nervousely. The secondhand was inching towards the 12, and school was almost over. Sweat rolled down my forehead, and my tapping grew more forceful. After what seemed like hours of watching the seconds tick by, the bell rang and anxious teenagers poured out of the doors and into the crowded hallways. I stumbled out the door and found my locker.
"Hey, Jessica. You doing anything tonight?" A familiar voice asked. I turned to see my best friend Eric leaning on the locker next to mine.
"Not really, why?" We were always hanging out in the afternoon. We had a record of 56 days at each other’s place continuously, and were proud of it.
He looked at me, to the ceiling and back to me again. "Oh, well... I was sort of wondering if..." He shut his brown, beautiful eyes, took a deep breath and shook his head. "Never mind. So, what do you want to do for our 57th day record?"
I studied his beautiful face carefully. He, as usual, was wearing a crooked smile that lit up his face so perfectly and his black, shiny hair was swept across his forehead, slightly covering his eyes.
Inside, I was screaming, "I want to spend the rest of my life with you!" But of course, I really couldn't tell him I loved him, so instead I answered, "Well, I was thinking of renting a video game and hangin at my place. But what were you about to say?" I put on a silly, curious face and waited for an answer.
He blinked and thought for a moment. "It was nothing. So your place... What time should I come?"
"How about we ride home together?" I offered. Even though I was in a hurry, nothing was too important for Eric. "You up for that?"
"Sure! I'll meet you outside where the bikes are, okay?" He walked away and waved. I sighed and dug through my cluttered locker.
"Jessica, you are sooo stupid." I whipped my head around, startled. "Why don't you just ask him out already? You know he's into you!" My friend Jane was always trying to get us together.
"Listen, Jane. I'm in a hurry, okay? Go hang out with Jamie or something." Jamie, Jane and me were all best friends -except for Eric, he was my best best friend- and people called us the "three blue jays".
She huffed and stomped away towards Jamie. I hurried over to the front doors, but someone stopped me in my tracks.
"Hey, Jessica. You doin anything Saturday night?" It was Kyle, a guy who really liked me, even though he wasn’t brave enough to say it himself.
"Actually, Kyle, I am. And I'm only going to say this once, I don't want to go out with you, okay?" I know it was a little mean lying to him, but with the millions of times he's asked me out, he had it coming.
"You'll change your mind someday, I know it." He winked and walked out the door. I huffed and stomped out the door. The front of the school was practically deserted, except for Eric, waiting by our bikes.
I walked over and said,” Okay. Lets go." He smiled and hopped on his bike, and I did the same. We rode off to my house.
Chapter 2: Eric
I looked at the clock, hoping she noticed how soon the end of school. Just a few more seconds, I thought. Pfft, who am I kidding? A few seconds is like a few hours when you're staring at a clock anxiously. Finally, the bell rang and what little classmates I had shuffled out the room. I joined them, and thanks to my being tall, I peered over the crowd and spotted Jessica.
I was secretly overwhelmed by her presence every day. She was medium height, and through my eyes the most beautiful black haired, brown-eyed 16-year-old girl I had ever seen, that anyone had seen.
I took a deep breath and walked over to her locker. Leaning against the locker next to hers, I said, "Hey, Jessica. You doin anything tonight?"
She turned to me and seemed thoughtful for a moment. She shortly answered, ""Not really, why?" I noticed the gleam in her eye, but looked up and noticed the lights on the ceiling were reflecting on her eyes, making them seem happier and brighter. "
Oh, well... I was sort of wondering if..." I had been planning to ask her out for about two years now, since we started being friends. I shut my eyes, took a breath and answered, "Never mind. So, what do you want to do for our 57th day record?"
She stared at me for a while, and started talking about plans. WE agreed to go to her place, and rent a video game. I waved good-bye, and walked to my locker, which was conveniently located on the way from my last class to the door. I grabbed my books I needed for homework and smiled on my way out the door.
A few minuets later, Jessica came out and we hopped on our bikes and rode off.
After the 20 minuets of riding to her house, we stayed outside and sat with out legs hanging over the edge of her porch and talked. One of the things we talked about was that school was almost over, and she was going to move schools next year. Then all of a sudden panic struck me. The school she was going to was half way across the USA!
"Um... Jessica?" I asked, and I knew she could tell that I was nervous and panicked.
"Yea? " she answered, curious.
"Um," I repeated. "When, exactly, are you leaving?"
"The last day of school. I'm going straight to the plane from school. I'm playing the piano in a concert! My own concert!" She exclaimed.
"That’s so cool... You must be really good..." I had never heard her play, but I really didn't care about her skills as long as I could keep her here with me.
"Why aren't you exited? This is a one in a million chance! It's not like you can go find a good pianist on the streets." She exclaimed.
"It's not that I don't want you to play, I just want you to... stay here with me." She looked me in a weird way. I guessed I was blushing, and she smiled.
"I really will miss a lot of things here, it's just that this piano competition means the world to me. And I will be visiting in the summer time, so you will be able to see me from time to time. Except my first visit is a few years away..."
She really is leaving, I thought. She really is going to leave ... And it's already so close to summer!
Chapter 3: Jessica
The next few weeks passed by fast. It seemed like just hours till I was to be on a plane, though it was just one more week away. Eric seemed more and more frantic the closer the day came.
* * *
I looked through the small window. I could see little fields in strange shapes, and busy highways crawling their way around the land.
"Would you like something to drink? Or maybe some snacks?" A lady in a red airplane uniform asked.
"No, but thanks." I replied.
I sighed and looked out the window. I miss him already, I thought.
