• Scorch was walking through the forest. The leafs of the trees blocked all the sunlight except for a few pin sized holes that made the sunlight look like stars. Scorch would have enjoyed walking through here any other day, but today was different. He knew what he did was wrong. He tried to convince himself what he did was for the greater good for humanity. He had always found better ways to do things but he had panicked, and went with the easy way out.

A stick snapped behind him. He spun around to see who it was. It was Chark… his father. He didn’t greet Scorch with his usual smile, but with a look of anger, disappointment, and fear all at the same time. A chill ran down Scorch’s spine. He can’t have known what happened. He wasn’t there… but he did know.

“Ten thousand people…” Said Chark in an angry and disappointed voice. When you’re a young hatchling dragon, being scolded for doing something wrong that can’t really count as fear. Scorch had never been afraid of his father… until now. Scorch backed away fearing an attack from him, but all that happened was Chark walking forward, keeping the space between them the same... only a few feet.

“It was the only way…” Scorch tried to explain.
“There is no excuse for killing ten thousand people!”
“I- I’m sorry father, b- but he would have found out what I was doing he would have gotten a- away.” Scorch was now backed up against a tree. He remembered back to the blinding white light coming down from the clouds… destroying the entire town.

    ~~Three Days Earlier~~

Scorch was in his human form. He looked at his pocket watch. It didn’t tell time, in fact he had many instruments that didn’t do what they looked like they should do. The watch’s single hand pointed to one word, the one word that would end up killing ten thousand people. The watch pointed to the word… ready. It meant that he was here. The man he was after, the man that had kidnapped and killed his daughter and many other dragons before her.

The watch had started to get hot… unbearably hot. Scorch gave off a thunderous roar. Then he realized he was no longer in his human form but in his dragon form. Only one man could do that to him… it was the man he was after. Scorch looked down the street, and there he was, standing in the center of the street with an evil smile slowly walking towards Scorch.

Scorch knew that if he fought he would lose and many more dragons would die. Scorch flew strait up into the clouds. Hoping it looked like he was running away. It did. Scorch looked down through the clouds and saw what he was hoping for. The man was looking up waiting for Scorch to fly back down.

Scorch concentrated all his energy on the town. He could feel the clouds around him start to spin. The spinning started at the edge of the town right to the glowing center where Scorch was. He could feel the energy surrounding him. He could sense the dragon slayer under him just starting to understand what was happening and then understanding that it was too late for him. But the other thing Scorch sensed was all the insistent people in the town, ten thousand of them. Scorch tried to stop the spell and stop the energy that was about to burst out of the clouds. But it was too late to stop the spell; he was too far into it. All he could do was watch as he killed thousands of insistent people.

A single blinding white beam of energy the size of the town burst through the clouds and as it hit he could feel the fear of all the people, the fear of parents hugging their children for the last time to the one man he was intending to kill. He could feel the hopes and dreams of all the children dieing, from the child who wanted to be a veterinarian to the child that wanted to be a dragon. Scorch would have chuckled at this any other time except now.

Then it hit the town. It hit with the force that shook the entire Earth. There was no hope that someone would survive. It would keep going till everyone was dead. It was called a purification spell, it should have been called a death spell. When it stopped all that was left was a huge creator.

    ~~Present Day~~

Scorch looked back at Chark. He still had that look of fear, anger, and disappointment. “I was hoping that by saving you from your mother you wouldn’t have become evil like her… I guess I was wrong.”
    “I’m not evil like her… I- I tried to stop it b- but I- I couldn’t. I- I’m sorry.”
“This was exactly how Trillium became evil. One incident then the darkness took her over.” He looked directly into Scorch’s eyes. ”You know what must happen.”
“Trillium was d- different. S- She didn’t have the power to fight off the darkness. A- and there are still people I need to help.”
“Don’t worry about that. I can take care of that… I’m sorry son… it must happen this way.”

Before Scorch could say anything more, a huge force fell on him. The tree he had backed up against had fallen on him. Scorch roared out in pain he saw Chark look away from his dying son. Then… all went black.

As Chark walked away a tear fell from his eye. He had killed his son, his one and only son. He then realized that Scorch had been right. He did have the power to fight of the darkness. He realized that he was no better than Scorch. He had reacted without thinking and it had cost him the life of his son. He roared out in sadness. It was the saddest sound ever heard.

    The End
