• Chapter Five;

    The story of one’s life

“Rayne,” Strieber called as leaned out of his office. “We need to talk.”

Raven looked up at me and held up his hands.

I stared at him for a long moment till it clicked in my head. “You didn’t tell him!” I hissed. “He’s probably found out, and is wondering why I didn’t tell him.”

Raven smiled. “I figured that it really wasn’t my place to tell him so I didn’t.” He whispered as he went back to eating his sandwich.

“That’s right you eat that sandwich.” I hissed pointing at him.

“It’s delicious.” He said between big bites. “I owe you one,” He said with a chuckle.

I took my time as I walked to Strieber’s office, I really didn’t look forward to him yelling at me cause I didn’t tell him that I was living with multiple vampires.

Strieber looked up from his papers to me as I walked through the door. “Shut the door Rayne.” He said starting to get up.

First name basis cue the, oh s**t factor.

“I have come to a under standing of what happened recently with the attack on you, I think that they are connected.” He said looking at the papers in his room.

I exhaled a long breath that I had been unaware I was holding. It wasn’t about my living arrangements.

“What are your conclusions?” I asked folding my legs.

He took a deep breath. “The races that split from their groups were angry that their masters succumbed to the rules so fast.”

“Hmm,” I whispered. “Or it could be something completely different.”

Strieber frowned. “What are you not telling me Osaki?”

I smiled quickly and stood up. “There have been four murders in the last three weeks. I think that they are working there way up the enforcer poles.”

Strieber leaned back in his chair and chewed on the end of his glasses. “Go on,”

Once I had the okay to keep going, I was on full stop. No one could stop me. “First they killed Reggie, who so happened to be an intern here. Then they offed Gabby, who was a secretary. But her body was so badly mangled that no one could really tell who she was. But I think that’s what they wanted.”

“Alright, if they wanted to destroy the food chain, why are they going after police? Were not very high up?” he added.

I nodded. “That’s right were not.” I said lifting up my hand and pointing at the stack of papers on his desk. “But, we do enforce the laws upon the supernatural.”

Strieber nodded. “Alright there was Peter,” He took a deep breath. “That makes three.”

    “Madison.” I whispered.

“You said that was a coincidence.” He answered.

“I thought so too, that is until some new evidence came into play.”

“Evidence,” Raven chimed in walking through the door.

    “I thought I locked that.” I hissed.

“The locks broken, any who go on?” Strieber grumbled.

“That’s right new evidence, I have right to believe that there is some one working on the inside. Here at this precinct.” I widened my eyes to make it sound scarier.

“Alright, where is the evidence.” Raven chimed as he leaned up against Strieber’s desk.

I pulled out to plastic baggies and placed them on the table in front of me.

Strieber got up from his desk to come get a better look. “Where did you get these Rayne?” He growled.

    “On the scene,” I hissed.

“Why do you have them, these are precinct property.” Raven whispered.

“Actually no, they are mine. They were meant to be delivered to me by the deceased.” I whispered.

“By whom,” Strieber asked, reaching for the letters.

I pulled back. “The first one was handed to me by Madison; the second one was nailed above her body.”

“Alright where is the third one then?” Raven asked walking closer to us.

    “Third one,” I started.

“Yes,” Strieber said catching on quickly. “There are three murders
    but, only two letters.”

“Right,” I answered. “I only received two letters because Madison was only at two Scenes.” I concluded.

Raven clicked his tongue and smiled. “Wow, Osaki I think that you are actually after something.”

I turned towards him and glared. “Look smart as-,” I cut myself off and looked back at Strieber. “I believe that Madison was an Eye for the Rebel Gang.”

“How is that possible, before I hired her I did a background check. She had nothing.”

I pointed a finger at the picture on his desk. “A demon can kill anyone one and take control of their body. Madison could have been dead for a long time. I believe that there is still some one among us that is an eye for their leader.”

Strieber cleared his throat and waved his hand towards the door. “I think I have something to work off now, thank you Rayne.” He whispered.

I nodded and made my exit, Raven close on my tail. “I’m going home Raven.” I hissed. “I don’t need you following me.”

Raven looked at me and frowned. “Going home to your Vampire honeys?” He asked half joking.

I kept my eyes straight as I headed out of the office.

The Jeep was in its normal space, but a dark figure clouded the driver’s seat so I automatically walked over to the passengers. As I climbed in I noticed that Pierce had a scared/angry look on his face. “What’s up?” I asked as I buckled my seat belt.

Pierce put the jeep in reverse and didn’t start talking till we were on the road to the Villa.

    “Thistle is here.” He whispered.

Now I knew why he was driving. So I couldn’t do the whole exit thing.

He cleared his throat and tightened his grip on the steering wheel. “Thistle is at the house, she’s staying there..”

I glared at the twisting road a head of me. “Nathaniel is allowing this?” I hissed.

Pierce nodded. “I told him that it would be a bad idea, that she didn’t want you alive. But he pulled the ‘Mon Ami, we want Ma Chéri to be alive when the war ends. Not six feet deep in the ground.’”

I rolled my eyes. “That so won’t work because that b***h wants me dead.” I hissed.

Pierce nodded. “For once, I actually fully agree with you.” He whispered.

The rest of the ride home was us grumbling back and fourth about what we were going to do. Finally our conclusion ended on I was going to get my own place.

As I stepped out of the jeep, I could hear violin music drifting though the air. I looked at Pierce and took a long deep breath. I didn’t even have to ask before he answered.

“Thistle likes to have violin music being played as she reads.” He whispered holding out his hand towards me.

I looked at the ground as I grabbed his hand. “Couldn’t she just get an IPod like any other normal person?”

Pierce smiled. “Now if she was a normal person I think that both you and I could stand her a bit more them we can now.”

I nodded and made my way slowly up the marble steps.

“Come on now Rayne, if we don’t go in there soon she’ll come out here. She’s waiting for you.” Pierce said trying to hurry me up. But I didn’t want to hurry. I wanted to stay out in the open air so I could take off when ever I wanted to.

But against my every will I walked into the house. Thistle was lying
on Nathaniel’s lap reading what looked like a picture book.

“Nathaniel.” She whispered in a child like voice. “Could you close the window; a rancid smell is getting in.”

I glared at her and started to walk towards me room.

“Ma Chéri, could you please come in here?” He asked patting the chair next to him.

I growled and looked up at him. He seriously didn’t think that I was going to go in there and play nice did he? I shook my head and kept walking. Pierce closely behind me. “Look Nathaniel I am really tired and don’t want to deal with the princess tonight.” I hissed, the anger clearly coating my words.

Nathaniel looked up at Pierce and said something in French something that made him stop and turn around.

I looked back and saw Pierce walking towards them.

Nathaniel got up and started to walk towards me. “Ma Chéri what is wrong with you?” He asked softly. “I can feel the anger floating around like a big black cloud.”

I looked at him with one eye brow raised. “You did not just ask that.” I hissed.

“Aw, so it is what I thought that it was. You don’t like Lady Thistle being here.”

I nodded as if saying, duh.

Nathaniel held out his arm for me to take. “May I explain something to you?”

I nodded but kept my arms tight to my chest.

“Thistle is the third raining queen in the Demon majesty. She is also the youngest out of a large family of ten brothers and sisters.” He said walking in front of me, telling me to follow him without even using words.
I took a look at Pierce and shuddered as Thistle laid her head on his lap. I had to leave, I had to get out of the range of eyesight that I could watch Pierce getting fondled by the doll. So I followed Nathaniel.

    “Go on,” I hissed.

“Right,” Nathaniel said as he started to head down one of the many halls in the villa. “As I was saying, Thistle didn’t really grow up before she had a baby with one of the commoners, er hmm.” He was trying to find a way to make the fact that she still acted like a child okay.

Well I for one was not going to let it slide by that easily.

“Look I don’t have a child, and I don’t plan on having one. But I tell you if I did then I would definitely be more grown up then she is.” I hissed pointing at her.

Nathaniel shook his head. “Let me tell you a story.”

I groaned. “Anything else about her and my head is going to explode.”

He shook his head. “Non Ma Chéri this story is not about Thistle but
    about myself.”

I crossed my arms across my chest and took in deep breaths easing them out. “Fine,”

Nathaniel held out his hand. “Shall we go to my office then? You see, my villa has walls, and all walls have ears so I would like it better if we spoke some where more private.”

I understood that. “Fine,” I repeated. I walked quickly into the room and plopped down on one of the multiple couches in the room.

Nathaniel quickly walked over to bar and poured himself a drink. “Ma Chéri would you like one?” He asked holding up a clear crystal glass with a bronze liquid in it.

I shook my head. “I would like to stay sober for your story if you don’t mind.”

    Nathaniel nodded. “Touché,”

He sat down and looked at the door. “Where shall I begin?”

I thought for a moment then smiled. “I don’t know where you grew up so, you can start there.”

Nathaniel nodded. “I grew up in the east side of London, my parents were not rich but they were not poor. To tell the truth I was a farm boy.” He smiled and went on. “Mother bore six kids, I being the eldest son and Patricia being the eldest daughter. Patricia was three years older then I and was to be wed to the king’s son, since she was quite the beauty. But the day that they were to be wed, my sister eloped.”

I pulled my knees up closer to my chest and stared at him till he started his story back up again.

“I didn’t see her again till the eve of my nineteenth birthday. I was walking in the market when I heard a women scream, of coarse since I was a boy I rushed into the save the poor maiden. Back then I would usually plan my means of attack, but when I saw my sister lying on the ground I went after the man without a second thought. It was over before I knew I was hit. He bit me sucked me almost completely but left some life in me since he was full of my sisters and whom ever else he had fed upon that night.”

“I was left on the ground for what felt like days till I finally drifted to what I thought would be death. But alas when I awoke I was on a hard bed.”

“Don’t move.” A voice told me. The voice was stern and wise. “I am going to feed you.” He whispered and I felt a straw slip between my teeth. “Try to suck in.” He whispered.

I felt my body tense as I sucked in the warm liquid. Suddenly I could feel it coarsening though my veins down into my stomach. I had to know what this food was. When I had the strength to open my eyes I stared up at my savior.

His eyes were the color of molding lava, so warm. I wished I could reach out to him but he never seemed to be close enough.

Time moved on and I began to live the life that a young vampire was supposed to. My saviors name was Steven host, a vampire knight that was turned into the living dead king. He taught me the way of the royal and taught me to rule. I was so young when I think about it. I was to young to become the King when Steven disappeared. On the night of my coronation I was to be faced with the worse decision on my life.

That night I watched all the guests glide across the floor with ease and skill, but then my eyes were torn away from the crowd to the door as a raven haired beauty walked down the stairs.

My second was already walking towards her, I knew that he would be a better person for her to talk to since he was more her age anyway. I watched as they conversed, but she looked at me with such passion in her eyes that it made my blood run quickly. I guess that it was what humans call their heart starting to pound.

I smiled, but then was distracted when a women came up to talk to me. When I looked back the girl was gone, but my second was still there looking up at me with terrified eyes.

My heart stopped and I had to look away.

Nathaniel looked up from his papers that he had been fidgeting with and looked at me, I was sleeping so soundly so peacefully. He stood up and walked over to the couch and touched my fore head softly. A sigh escaped his lips and he leaned down to pick me up. He carried me to my room with ease and laid me in the bed. Placing the covers over my body.

He walked down stairs and back into his office where Pierce waited.
Pierce sad on the arm of the couch and looked up from a paper that he held in his hands. “Nathaniel, I have to go.” He whispered. “She’s coming.”

Nathaniel took in a sharp breath and nodded. “Rayne is going to be hurt once she realizes your absence.” He whispered.

Pierce nodded. “I believe it is for the best.”

Nathaniel looked at his desk. “I am going to give Ma Chéri the house that we have on the cove. I believe that she will not be able to live peacefully under the same roof as Thistle.”

Pierce nodded. “That would also be for the best.”

Nathaniel looked back at the green haired vampire. “I don’t know if I can let her go that soon though.” He said slamming his hands on the desk. “Why, why her of all people Pierce? Why did she have to go through such a tragedy? What the hell did a sixteen year old girl do to deserve this.”

Pierce shook his head. “I believe you did the right thing though.”

    “Did I?” Nathaniel asked.

Pierce got up and started to walk towards the door. “I would appreciate that you didn’t tell Rayne that I have gone off to be with my fiancé .”

Nathaniel nodded. “I shall keep her uninformed, but you are going
to have to tell her some time, I believe that Ma Chéri is falling deeply in love with you.”

    With that Pierce was gone.
