Silleva frooze. On either side of the caption stood perfect mimics of both Grets and Fess. Neither of them had noticed her entry; the three were too deep in discussion with the caption to notice her presence. That was her first clue that they were not the real deal.
Silleva wasn’t sure exactly when she figured it out, but as she listened to them talk, she slowly moved closer, pulling her pistol and pocket knife out, ready to kill both the imposters.
“-So you see, we have no choice but to take it. A thing so dangerous can’t POSSIBLELY be allowed to live, especially when it’s so expertly trained to kill.”
“But she’s my best shot. I can’t give something up, just because you two hoaxes walk in here and tell me she is some kind of ‘super genetically advanced human that mutated like all the rest of the governments experiments’,” Caption said, crossing his arms over his chest.
To anyone on the outside, this simply looked like something a person would do when they were cross. To anyone under the caption’s command, it was the signal to either back off and guard against flying bullets, or to open fire yourself. Silleva chose the later.
Silleva flew at the larger man, shoving her knife through the back of his neck and severing his spinal cord and killing him instantaneously. She opened fire on the smaller man in the same instant, hitting him in the chest. The men both fell to the floor. Silleva kicked the smaller man over to make sure he was dead, ignoring the startled caption. The man gurgled.
“You’ll regret letting it live. One day…. it’ll…. kill us all…” he spat out blood on her foot, then choked on his own blood and died.
Fess was in the room in a flash, having waited for Grets to get down the steps before following after her. He blinked at the dead impostor of himself.
“Geez, I didn’t know you hated me so much, Cap’,” he said, then looked up and saw Silleva was the only one with a weapon drawn, “Oh…”
“Yeah…” Caption slide his eyes away from the dead body slowly, looking toward Silleva, “Thanks for the back up. You never were one to wait for someone else to take care of business.”
Silleva smiled. The caption was also her uncle, her father’s brother. He had been her favorite family member after her brother and mother her whole life. Her father had always seemed to have too many secrets from all of them.
She knew why now, of course. He had been a member of this organization himself, when he was alive. Keeping the secret was so vital, that few in it ever married or dated people from the outside, as her father had. She could understand and sympathize with her deceased father for not being much of one, even after her mother’s mysterious death.
Caption smiled a far off smile, a loving look glancing across his old face before disappearing into the hard, stern look he almost always had. She knew what he had been thinking. He had told he once, one night when they were both off duty and had left the hidden base to get drinks at a local club.
“You have your mother’s smile,” he’d said, trailing off, and looking sad for a moment, “Your mother’s beautiful smile…”
The bizarre love triangle had been a constant puzzle in the back of her mind since then.
Silleva blinked and brought herself back to the present. Grets had finally made it to the room, and was picking up both the limp bodies off the two dead men. Her knife sat neatly on the caption’s desk, so she sidled over and loosely picked it up, wiping the blood on her pants’ leg before closing it and replacing in in its small case on her belt. Silleva walk up to Grets as he made his way out the door. Giving him a friendly punch to the shoulder, she sprinted back up the stairs, down the main hall, and down another set of spiral stairs to the organization’s condos. More slowly, she ran down the hall to the far condo at the end of the hall, scanning her eyes, fingers, and ears to let herself into her home as she prepared herself mentally for a night out, taking out the organization’s latest assigned target.
