• [Here's the best story I've written so far, and my personal favorite, enjoy!]
Long ago, many years before this time, a demon by the name of Arrox walked the mortal plane. Few knew of his existence and he was easily forgotten with the passing of time. Just as humans knew once upon a time that gods controlled the elements, they know now that demons and the like do not exist in the real world. Well, they’re in for a rude awakening…
I was running through a forest and out of breath, carrying a sword as long as I was tall. What was I running from and where was I going? These were questions I had no way of knowing the answer. It was catching up to me, the darkness. It was lapping at my heels as I ran for my life. A cold chill ran up my spine as a sinister laugh filled the air. “You’re not getting away, Caine, not this time!” Did I mention that it knew my name? No? Sorry about that but I’m in the middle of fleeing for my life from something that has been haunting me for the past three nights. I’ve always been able to escape it before but this time I’m afraid it might actually catch me; it’s never gotten so close! A hand grabbed my arm, stopped me short and I was wrapped in a blanket of chilling darkness. I lashed my sword all around me, praying that it would hit whatever it was that had captured me. THUNK! The blade hit something solid, not metallic, not a tree, it was... soft where it hit. The blinding darkness cleared a little to show a human-shaped figure. As the darkness moved further away, long silver hair caught some of the moonlight and flashed, deep crimson eyes glowed eerily, whoever it was, was wearing a black kimono with a white sash, no shoes, and had a pair of amazing black feathery wings.
“I’ve finally caught you, Caine.” He said with a silky voice that I recognized as that of my pursuer. I stared at where my sword was. It had hit him directly in the side but there wasn’t a drop of blood coming from where I hit nor was there even a hint of pain marring his face. “What are you and who are you?” I asked, still too numb to think about moving the sword. “I am Arrox, my blood flows through your veins, dormant but still there. I have been waiting for a strong enough successor to accept my power; I had feared I would never find one but here you are, at long last.” My head went fuzzy, fuzzier than it normally was at this time of the night. My knees gave out and I fell to the ground on my hands and knees, the sword falling to the ground with a soft thud. Arrox walked over to me and kneeled down, one hand on my shoulder. It was surprisingly warm. He said softly, “I’ll give you time to clear your head, call my name when you want to talk, I’ll always be right here.” He poked my head lightly. Everything faded away.
“BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP!” It was my alarm. I blinked away the sleep from my eyes and turned off my alarm, noting the time was 6:20 am. I had only ten minutes to get ready for school. I always used to write off those realistic nightmares as mere dreams, but now what would I do? It was too real to ignore this time; I needed to think about what that demon had said. Would I take his powers or not? How should I know it isn’t all just some trick to free himself from boredom or something? Would he be taking over my body or just giving me powers? Did I even want his powers? What if they turn me into a killer, a monster? The light snoring of my roommate brought me back to reality. We had eight minutes to start walking to class or we’d be late.
I groggily got out of bead and walked to his. “Tae! Come on Tae, wake up! We’re going to be late again if you don’t hurry!” He opened his eyes and mumbled “mmn…morning,” wiping the sleep from his blue-green eyes. I tousled his golden shaggy hair and laughed at his baby-face as he made a frown. Avoiding the pillow he threw at me, I walked to my dresser and put on my uniform. Plain black pants, a black button-down shirt with white linings on the sleeves and collar, and I slipped on a pair of white socks and then my black shoes. Now we had five minutes to get out the door. Tae had just finished getting himself dressed as I walked into the bathroom. I quickly brushed my shaggy black hair, brushed my teeth, put on deodorant, went pee quickly and then checked the mirror to see how I looked. My black eyes stared back at me and for a second I could have sworn I saw that Arrox guy in my reflection before I walked out of the bathroom. Tae went in to freshen up as well. I grabbed my bag and his and started walking out the door saying, “I got your bag, okay, Tae? Catch up with me!” I was out a minute early. About two minutes later, he was running down the steps to catch up with me.
School starts at 7:00 am. If you’re not on time, you can kiss your a** goodbye. This was, after all, a prestigious school for talented wizards (yes, it’s an all-boys school and yes, wizards do exist in our country and are widely accepted, not feared as they had been in the old times), they had no room for slackers. The only thing that sucks about going to an all-boys school is that there are no chicks, none what so ever, it’s enough to drive us all practically insane! I mean, at least in high school it was co-ed! ‘Why couldn’t my parents let me go to a normal school?’ I groaned in annoyance “What-cha thinkin’ about, Caine?” Tae’s voice said next to me. “Girls, females, chicks, women, sex, and all that…” I said as if it was a common thing (well, it was here). “Oh.” Tae wasn’t normally so quiet and I thought he would laugh and say “Me too!” or something like that. “What’s wrong?” My friend was looking down and it was downright unnatural. “Nothing,” he mumbled. “Fine, whatever, you’ll tell me when you feel like it, I got-cha,” I replied casually. We walked along the sidewalk, feeling the nice spring breeze and the freshly risen sun playing across our faces. I couldn’t help but smiling and closing my eyes, it was just too much of a perfect morning. Too perfect indeed.
“SKREEECH!!!” “CAINE! WATCH OUT!!!” I was shoved hard to the side, landing painfully on the pavement, and a gut-wrenching “CRACK” was heard. I heard shouting, yelling, and scrambling and I felt someone lifting me; the sounds faded into background noise and the only thing I could see was the bloody figure of Tae in front of a car. “TAE!!!” I tried to scream. Nothing came out but a spurt of red liquid. Then everything went black.
“Be-beep, be-beep, be-beep….” ‘Huh? My alarm?’ I blearily opened my eyes. ‘Why am I so achy? Is Tae awake? I don’t hear any snoring, where is he?’ As my eyes came into focus, I had to squint from the bright whiteness that surrounded me. I was on a soft bead with an I.V. drip attached to my arm. My heart rate was making the soft beeping sound to my left. I looked down and saw I had a bandage wrapped around my middle and my chest, it hurt to move so I decided to lay still. I had a few band-aids on my arm and I felt one of those soft patches on my forehead. Then it all came back to me, the screeching of the car, Tae saving my life, Tae in front of the car, in a pool of his own blood. The heart monitor sped up. ‘Where is Tae? Where is he?!’ I looked around frantically, no one was there; just two empty beds and myself in a blinding white room. Then the door opened, revealing a doctor.
“Where is Tae? Is he okay?” I needed answers. The doctor was bald and he had the traditional white coat on and stethoscope around his neck. “You mean the blonde boy?” He asked, looking at me with sad eyes. “Yes. Where is he?” Good, he was willing to talk to me. “He’s in critical condition; we have the best doctors and wizards alike working on him. You have him to thank for your life, you know.” He said this as he did a check-up on my health. “I know,” I mumbled, wanting to cry but also to hide my tears. “Well, you’re free to get up and walk around, just be careful with your ribs, they are still healing up but they should be just fine; as long as you aren’t planning on doing anything more than walking short distances for a few days.” He ended with a warning. “Thank you,” I said, getting up. “What room is he in? I want to see him.” I asked hopefully. “One twenty four, but you can only look through the window, you can’t go in there.” He said this while tidying up the bed area where I was. “Thank you again, Dr.-” “Noven, Dr. Noven,” he got up and shook my hand. “It was nice to meet you… Cain Zimer, correct?” “Yes, nice to meet you too; goodbye.” I left, my left hand over my stomach and my right on the door. As I walked out into the hallway, the first thing I did was check the room number I was in before. 52. Okay, so that means I have to go quite a ways. I walked along the hallway until I found someone. It was a nurse. “Um, excuse me?” She stopped and looked at me. “Do you know where room 124 is?” I asked her. “You’re the other boy that was in the car accident?” She asked, looking me over. I had my school uniform on, but my shirt was unbuttoned, showing my bandages. “Yep,” I answered. “Follow me then,” was her short reply. She turned around and led me to an elevator; we went to the fifth floor, when it opened we were greeted with the stench of formaldehyde, cries of pain, and the sobs of loved ones. I was overcome with the emotions pouring out from that hallway. Silent tears streamed down my face. I looked up at the nurse, she seemed unaffected by it all. My guess is that she was used to it. I wiped the tears away and followed her into the hall to the right.
We walked a little ways; I counted the room numbers as we walked. ‘117, 118, 119, 120, 121, 122, 123... 124!’ I was finally there. The nurse said goodbye and I simply nodded to her. I looked through the large window and almost passed out from all of the blood. It was everywhere; towels of blood thrown about the floor, packets of blood attached to Tae’s white body, little splatters of blood droplets here and there… and then there was Tae. His blond hair was dirty and caked with dry blood, his arms and legs were bandaged, his left arm was in a cast, his ribs and stomach bruised horribly and the doctors and nurses were working frantically to help him while the wizards did what they could to mend the bones. (Believe me, I can tell when a wizard is working hard, wizards can see other wizards’ magic; where it is and what it is doing.) The tears began flowing again as a stared at Tae, pale and lifeless…wait…there was a small breath of life still moving his lithe and damaged chest up and down…
‘You can save him.’ ‘Huh?’ ‘You can save him.’ ‘Arrox?’ ‘Yes, with my power, you could save your friend’s life; there is no way he will survive otherwise.’ “WHAT?!” I said it aloud, causing some dreary eyes to turn to me, and back to where they had previously been. ‘I mean that he was hurt terribly, how he looks now is far better than before. I saw him on the pavement, his body was twisted everywhere and he most likely had a broken neck. In fact it’s a miracle that boy is still alive.’ The tears poured out more than ever. He had risked himself, his own life for a stupid roommate like me who was being an idiot for not paying attention to where I was. ‘It’s all because of me. I should have looked where I was going! I should have reacted faster! Why did I even close my eyes in the first place!? GODDAMNIT!!! I should have been the one to die, not him!’ I was screaming in frustration at myself. ‘He’s not dead yet, there’s still a chance kid. Just accept the power, I will remain here but you will change physically and grow in strength; mentally, physically, and magically. What do you say?’ “Yes.” I spoke firmly out loud. ‘Good, now repeat after me: En aula de animus,’ “En aula de animus,”
‘ego queso thi’ “ego queso thi”
‘translato mei ops es animus,’ “translato mei ops es animus,”
‘meus successio per cruor.’ “meus successio per cruor.”
‘Permissum ratio fio!’ “Permissum ratio fio!”
Then I felt it; a searing pain throughout my body. I fell to the floor and passed out for the second time that day. I woke up on the floor surrounded by concerned and confused faces. “What happened?” I asked as I rubbed my aching head, I probably hit it on the floor. “What happened? That’s what I’d like to know! I was hoping you could tell us!” Someone in the hallway said loudly. I felt a weight on my back and when I stretched the unfamiliar new muscles, I saw a pair of beautiful black wings, just like the ones on Arrox’s back. I was interrupted from the examination of my new wings by one of the doctors in the group. “Ahem, boy, we want an explanation on how you saved that blond boy’s life.” “What?” I was flabbergasted. “I don’t remember doing anything more than crying out in pain and passing out right here!” I stared at them, they stared at me… an awkward moment had begun. I don’t know about you but I absolutely hate awkward moments. “Uh…” I said, hoping someone would make a sound. Then; “CAINE!!!”
A blond haired person ran over to me, kneeled down and gave me a huge hug. I only caught a glimpse of his face but it was Tae! I hugged him back, saying “I can’t believe you’re alive! You looked like you were going to die! What happened while I was passed out?” He pulled back and sat beside me on the floor, “It’s incredible, they say that you fell to the floor screaming and then that your body just started to transform right here!” He made a motion to where I was sitting. “And then you got up, seeming completely fine after your abrupt outburst and change and you did ancient magic! Something that no one has seen or even attempted due to the immense concentration and power that it takes to control it! My body was healed in seconds. When I got up, I scared the doctors half to death and they ran a full check-up on me! I’m completely healthy, I have no medical problems what so ever!” He was speaking so fast it was hard for my fuzzy mind to keep up with him so I just stared at him in shock for a minute. I didn’t come to my senses until he gently put his hand on my shoulder. “Hey, Caine, what’s wrong? Is your body still hurting from the accident or something?” Tae sounded really concerned. “No, it’s not that…” I touched the place where my side had been sore and bandaged, no pain. I thought for a moment and then widened my eyes in realization.
“Arrox,” I whispered it; barely audible. Tae gave me a confused look and he said the name louder, “Arrox?” There was a gasp in the small group of people surrounding us in the hallway and the crowd parted. There was a thin boy, standing at an average height, with pale skin, white hair, small glasses and… purple eyes. He looked around himself as if praying that all these people were not looking at him. “Um... s-sorry,” he said quickly, before he ran off down the hall at an unexpectedly fast pace. No one made a move to go after him, so I did.
[the end... for now, tell me what you think!]
