Chapter 1:
A young woman stood in front of a green door with a gold 15 toward the top of the door. Below the number was a peephole and right below that, a gold knocker. To the left of the door was a doorbell. She had been standing there for about five minutes with a hand poised to knock, but she didn’t. Sure she was suppose to be there, she had an interview with the people inside-her soon to be roommates if everything went well- but she could help but feel nervous.
That and the noises from the other side of the door were a little on the crazy side. Crazy enough for her to think about not knocking and going back home. Her parents wouldn’t mind if she stayed home a little longer. They said she could just stay in her room, as long as she came out for meals regularly. Plus, she’d be by herself most of the time. Her parents were always going somewhere or other for work or pleasure. It would just be her and her youngest older brother if you don’t count the house keeper.
A crash brought her out of her thoughts. That was followed by a slew of curses, gunfire and…
“That sounds like Lady Gaga.” She muttered to herself amazed. She shook her head to knock herself from her current thought process and squared her small shoulders. With a final breath, she brought her hand down.
Blue-gray eyes glared at the figure standing in front of the television, ergo blocking the one outlet the owner of the blue-gray had.
“Do you understand that this game is the only thing stopping me from shooting up not only this place but my job too?” was said from between teeth being ground to powder.
“Didn’t I tell you earlier that we were expecting someone to see if they could fill the room?” the one in front of the TV said.
“We are?”
“Yes, Freddie, we are. Any minute now. And do you remember what else I told you?”
“…Eating cookie dough raw will give you cancer?”
“I told you and Matthew to clean up this pigs-sty before he got here!”
“Chill David.” Freddie said. “It’s not that bad.”
“Not tha- there are Mello Yellow and Pepsi bottles everywhere! And your filthy clothes are all over the place!”
“My clothes are not filthy! I’ve only wore them once…at least…” he countered. Then “Would you move it, ya goddamned pillowbitter! You’re gonna make me-“
There was a shot from the TV speaker closest to them then a voice that said “GAME OVER, SOILDER.”
“See what you did?! I got all the little Commie bastards in the game except one and as soon as you blocked the TV he went and killed me! Are you happy now?!”
“No, because you still didn’t get your s**t up off the floor.”
“Why the hell aren’t you yelling at Matt, he made the mess too.” Freddie grumbled.
“He got his mess up already.” David said defending their quiet third roommate.
Freddie was about to say something that would have ended in a fist fight between him and David when there was a knock on the door.
“Ah, s**t!” David swore. “That’s him. Matt, can you get the door? I’ve got to make Freddie get his crap outta here.”
“It’s not crap! It’s my stuff, and it can stay where it is!”
“The hell it can!” David screamed. “Get it out of here!”
“Would you stop pitching such a b***h fit? It’s hella annoying.” Freddie said. “And would you move your fat a**? It’s blocking the TV. Still.”
“My a** is NOT fat!”
While the two of them argued, Matthew, better known as Matt, went to the door. He opened it quickly and almost got hit in the stomach.
“Oh, sorry.” He looked down at the woman in front of his door. She was downright tiny, only coming up to his chest, (then again, he was a towering 6’3’’) and had a mop of deep red hair, taking on a hue that reminded him of a bloody wound. She looked up at him and he saw two circular pieces of glass blocking her eyes. The glare from the hallway light made it difficult to see what color they were. She was dressed in a grey hoodie that she practically swam in with slightly darker jeans that covered her legs. On her feet were a pair of beat up converse sneakers.
“Umm…can I help you?” Matt asked her.
“…Boy you’re tall.” Was what she said. She took a step back and looked him up in down. He had caramel-chocolate skin that looked smooth from the view she had, and his head was covered in light brown dreadlocks. He had grey eyes and a gold stud in his right nostril. It must’ve been warm in the apartment, because he only had on a wife beater undershirt and a pair of jean shorts that stopped right below his knees, and he was barefoot.
“Are you, like, a girl scout or something?” he asked her. She got pale, then blushed.
“D-do I look like a girl scout?” she asked loudly.
Matt blinked then replied with a “Yes.” Before they both heard a “The girl scouts are here?”
A head that contained sunny blond hair and blue-grey eyes appeared next to Matt’s head. The head also had a face that held a nose, a mouth that had a piercing towards the right corner and eyebrows above the eyes, the one on the left holding a small silver loop in it. She couldn’t see anymore of him after that.
“Hey put us down for those cookies that have the fudge on the bottom, and the peanut butter ones and the kind with the mint in them, y’know the chocolate ones. A box of each one would be nice.”
“I’m not a girl scout!”
He looked her up and down, then said “Then who the hell are you?”
She deflated a little bit, but popped right back up, saying “I’m here about the room for rent. I got an e-mail from a David saying I could come over today and take a look at it if I wanted, to see if I would like to move in.”
During her little speech, another head appeared in the doorway, this one free of piercing. This head had wavy brown hair that fell to a narrow chin and warm matching brown eyes under two finely arched eyebrows. The nose was straight and ended in a point, below that a full plump mouth.
“No,” the third head said. “I sent an e-mail to a guy named Brian something-or-other. Not a teenage runaway.”
“I’m not a run away!” she said hotly, her face quickly turning bright red.
“You the guy’s sister or something?” the blond one asked her.
“No! I’m Brian!”
