• I held my breath, hoping that it wouldn’t escape just to never return. I grasped the golden doorknob in my trembling hand. With a flick of my wrist the door swung open in one simple motion as I let my breath go.
There was long wheaten hair with blue eyes before me. Her blue eyes were stained with a pale red film and tears. I could practically see the words written on her lips as she spoke them with light cherry lips.
“Who are you?” her beautiful voice chimed. I snapped back, taken away by her appearance.
“H-hai,” I jumbled the word as shook. Her face was covered with disdain. She didn’t want me here. I honestly didn’t want me here either.
“This is our dorm,” said forcefully, trusting her eyes in the opposite direction.
I glanced down at the white sheet in my hand, crumpled from anxiety. I held it out to her, “It’s my dorm too.” She took it from my quivering hand, shifting her eyes across the print.

“Fine,” she whispered, “I guess that’s your room over there.” She jabbed her thumb over to the stairs that flew up to the second floor. I slipped away, avoiding the disregard in her eyes. I walked up the stairs as fast as I could, trying to escape the uncomfortable feeling. The second floor was just door staring down a narrow hallway. Which door is mine? I thought. I glanced back down at the crumpled white paper.
    Room number 3
I walked down the hall the door, farthest on the right. I ripped open the door.
I stared at everything for a rather long time. The bed was pressed up into the corner, a small white desk with a chair to its left. A tiny dresser was placed next to it. It was perfect, surprisingly. There was but one small defect. The shelf that hung over the desk, was the problem. It hovered in such a way that I found rather sinister. I shrugged it off. I didn’t like the idea of being hovered over.
But then there was the window, a large window with shades draped over it. I pulled up the shades revealing a thick evergreen forest. A beautiful forest. I thought for a minute, why would they put the school next to a forest? Won’t students run away?
I grabbed some sheets out of the box and began to pull them over the mattress, adding the deep set blue quilt and pillows when I was done. The quiet was starting to make me slightly paranoid. Coming up with new ways to distract myself was becoming harder and harder. Everything was put away; my uniform was set for the next day. I dug back into the suitcase, my hands landing on a rectangular shape.

Smiling faces, joyful eyes. The last picture taken of my mother, this was the last picture taken before she died. I placed in gently on the desk, adjusting it so it would face the bed just right. I put my hand on the bed, something rough and cold followed by a crunch was beneath my hand.

A necklace, more than a necklace, my mother’s St. Michael medallion. White lined paper was tapped to the back. A note was written upon it.
    Hai,
Dad said he didn’t want you to have this. So I stole it. I know you wanted it, and I didn’t care what Dad said, he doesn’t know you like I do. I don’t think it was memories of Mom that made you do those things, but what I do think is that maybe a piece of her is what you need. So what? You cut off your hair because it reminded you of her. Personally, your hair bugged me because of that, so I’m glad you cut it. Just stay out of trouble, Hai. And be careful.
    - David
I traced my finger over the letters of my name over and over. I glanced back over at the medallion. Held it in my hands and hung it around my neck. I looked closer at the imprinted angle. Flowing wings and the words Protect Us In Battle gliding over his head.
“St. Michael,” I whispered under my breath, “protect me in battle.”
