• Our simple story begins in a time which is not known. But from what can be gathered, it seems to be in the 1950's or so, in a generic village in Vietnam. Our hero An Dung, was a simple farmer, growing small amounts on his tiny speck of land. He didn't grow rice as most did, but rather a small possibly few yards of cassava plants. He took pride in his work, and yet still knew that he could only provide much to feed himself only. Every day he worked to tend to the field, in silence.

He seldom appeared in nearby towns, for he saw no need for it. He hid himself from society, and because of such he has been more of a rumor than an actual person. Children who, being adventurous as they were, tried to seek out the man eventually gave up and turned back home, even the most determined.

He enjoyed his time alone, but the loneliness took a toll on his sanity, already being slightly tormented by the occasional annoying fly or gnat bouncing off of his face in a futile attempt to attack him. He developed a slight form of schizophrenia, in which he believes his plants are talking, and yet through a series of coincidences he holds them to be living creatures, offering their vegetables to him so he'll take care of them. They, according to him, have little sense of life for the populous of their own kind, and yet still strive to be save, and so he works to save them, keeping them in good health in a symbiotic relationship. He goes so far as to keep them protected from the weather whenever he can, and during the seasons where they can no longer prosper, he keeps their seed and prepares to plant.

From first glance, he may seem as a regular farmer, large muscles with his tan skin in his simple patchwork clothing. And so because of this, no one sees him for what he is. However, if anyone tried to observe him he would be chastised and persecuted, and so to avoid this he avoids people. Thus creating a cycle of torment for him. Where all that is left is him, and his cassava plants.
