Finally, the food was gone. Chris was surprised by how long it all lasted. For years he always looked into his nearly full fridge thinking Oh nothing to eat again. Now it was a reality. He checked every cupboard twice just to make sure he didn't miss a box of cereal or something. Good thing i realized this before it was too late. too bad cheerios was my last meal.
It had been weeks since it all began. First there was the emergency broadcast telling everyone to stay inside. Chris wasn't one to mess with the law so he stayed tuned till everything blew off. two weeks later and nothing, nada, zip diddly squat. It seemed as if there was some kind of contagion loose turning people into complete psychos. But not much else was said other than that.
Chris decided it was time to move on. No food wouldn't do for very long, maybe the neighbors had something to eat still. That is if they would let him in at all. They might not if they thought he might be out to kill them like the rest. He'd seen some images of what they would do to people and wouldn't blame them if they did. Of course that posed another problem, What if one of the crazies were out there? Chris walked into his bedroom and opened the closet doors. He picked up his grandfathers shotgun off the gun rack and loaded it. It was a side-by-side double barrel shotgun. 12 gauge of course. After throwing some ammo into a messenger bag, as well as a flashlight and some batteries, he was out the door and on his way.
Things didn't seem that bad. The television showed scenes of absolute carnage: bodies everywhere, cars wrecked left and right, fires raging unchecked. But this suburb had a different scene, pure nothingness. Chris couldn't describe it any other way. It was the same street he knew for years, just empty. There was a car or two missing and someone broke the Robinson's fence but nothing was changed otherwise. It almost looked like someone was playing a practical joke on everyone. Chris headed to the Jensen's house across the street first. He knew them well and they invited him to their thanksgiving dinner every year. Surely they'd let him in now.
As Chris approached the house something was already amiss. The front door was wide open. They always kept the door closed so that their dog never got loose. As he entered the home he could tell something bad happened here. there was blood all over the walls, mostly near the entrance but it ran down the hallway that led to the dining room. Chris raised his shotgun as he made his way down the hall. There was more carnage in the dining room with what looked like Mr.Jensen's body on the floor. That was the moment when Chris realized that it was all real. He was able to ignore the stench and stepped over the body.
The kitchen was surprisingly clean, other than a light blood trail that led to another hallway. Chris began to open up cupboards to look for food. Once again to his surprise there was an extreme lack of food. Other than a box of raisin bran the cupboards were wiped clean. He put the cereal into his bag and continued to search the house.
the study, living room, and exercise room were clean. The bedrooms however weren't. Chris found Mrs. Jensen's body in the master bedroom and what was left of little Bobby in the upstairs bedroom. The only one missing was the older daughter, Kaitlyn. Chris couldn't find her body anywhere in the house, as well as anything else he could eat. It was as he headed towards the entrance that he saw someone in the way. Chris saw the blood on the person's clothes and face and immediately raised his shotgun to them.
"You, Stay back. Your not a crazy are ya?" Chris said. The person at the door just limped forward and gave a weird growl. "I'm warning you, i'll use this. Stay back." Chris said louder as he began to step back. The person just kept limping towards him. Chris eventually hit the wall at the far end of the hall and kept the shotgun trained on the person. "Goddamnit stay back," He yelled as he fired his shotgun. The crazy's stomach exploded from the buckshot ripping into it. At first it stumbled back, then it began to limp forward again. Chris shot again, hitting it in the chest. The crazy fell backward and laid still in the hallway.
Chris opened the chambers and reloaded the gun, keeping his eyes on the body. Once it was loaded he made his way out the door, being careful when stepping around the body to make sure it didn't jump up and grab him like in the horror movies. As he exited the house he almost ran into a girl in the street. The girl pushed him over on his back and raised a baseball bat above her head.
"Stop don't hit me i'm not crazy!" Chris yelled before she swung. Just then he recognized her as Kaitlyn. "Wait. Kaitlyn?" She lowered the bat and recognized him as well.
"Mr.Y, Oh my God i'm sorry. Its just i heard the gunshots and i thought no one else was alive out here." She stepped back and was too shocked to help Chris up.
"yeah well i didn't think it was that bad out here. What are you doing out here? what happened?" Chris said as he picked himself off the ground.
"uhh well i was just getting hungry and started looking for some food, i didn't find much but it should last till tomorrow."
"Well i was out doing the same but what about what happened in your house?"
"I don't know, i was upstairs in my room and there were someone pounding on the door, dad went to answer and then i heard screaming and people fighting. I got out to see my mom run up to us with her arm bleeding. She told me to get back in my room and lock the door. After that i tried calling 911 but it was busy no matter how much i tried it and i heard more yelling and screaming and banging and then it stopped. I opened the door and saw a zombie eating mom."
Kaitlyn began to sob. " It saw me and came for me so i ran out here and tried to get people to help me but no one answered their doors and it kept coming for me so i kept running and i just started getting tired so i stopped but it would stop coming. I found this bat in the middle of a yard and beat the b*****d in the head with it and he died. Then i came back and locked the doors cause i was so scared and everyone was dead and i didn't know what to do." Then Kaitlyn broke down and cried.
Chris held her "Shhh, You're alright. Lets go into my house, we need to get somewhere safe." Chris took her back into his house. Whatever this was wouldn't just blow off after all.
