• Trust me, if life made sense, I wouldn't be writing this story. But a lot of the time, life just doesn't make any sense. Like when you're betrayed by one of the only people you trusted, or when it snows in August. Like when you don't ever talk to your best friend, because life just can't pull itself together and make sense.
Hello. My name is Sarah, and I wish I wasn't telling this story right now. But, like anything that is filled with true feelings, it needs to be told.
Everything started last September. Meet my brother, Philip, and James, Daniel, and Jordan, a couple of guys from my class. After racing the golf cart against Brandon on his feet, we headed over to Jordan's huge backyard for a good old fashioned Memorial Day bonfire. I groan as I watch them strip their shirts to run around the fire from my vantage point at the golf cart, only to groan louder when James, my best friend, sits on top of me. His 160 pounds of muscle hurts."What, you know you like it, don't you?" he teases.
"Just as much as if a truck ran over me;" I manage to gasp out. He gets up and we rejoin the crew for food and music.
Well, being in the dark near a bonfire is tiring, so I decided to lay down next to it. Suddenly, I realize someone's lying next to me: James. Shirtless in all his toned glory. "Whaddya want?" I ask, undaunted by his muscle. It's hard to be impressed with someone you've known since he was in preschool with you. especially if you're liking someone else, which I was: Jordan.
"Nothin'." he stretches out and edges closer. "Nice to have the day off, huh?" he edges closer, until he's talking into my ear. He's also officially made contact with my arm- and we're laying side by side. We talk for awhile, not quite realizing the other's hurried remarks of "We're going to get more firewood."
A few minutes of talking later, Daniel came back. "They told me to watch the fire," he told us, throwing in a few sticks, "because you wouldn't be watching it."
"That's not the fire they want him to watch," I murmured sarcastically.
James laughed and called to Daniel, "You're watching the wrong fire!"
A little while later, I started to get really tired. "I'm going to sleep," I told him.
"All right." He wrapped his arms around me, and I drifted off, surprised by how happiness came from such unexpected places.

Now, if you were paying close enough attention, you'd have noticed the "best friend" inserted before James' name, and attached it to the very beginning. Just an example of what life likes to do in its spare time.
