• Chapter 1
"In your backyard there are these little people with wings. They cure the earth with magic and pure energy. They live right in front of your nose, so you can't see them." My grandmother said to me.
"But what if you cross your eyes? Can you see them then?" I asked curiously, while trying to cross my little eyes.
" No my darling Kate, because when you cross your eyes everything gets blurry." She smiled at me, her smiles were always warm and welcoming.
I was five at the time, so my grandmother tried to explain things the best she could. She and I were the best of friends. She told me stories about magic, adventure, and creatures. Every time she told me a story I would sit on her lap and she would run her figures through my short brown hair.
After the stories, we would go out into her garden full of roses, lilies, chrysanthemums, and many other types of flowers. We would run around trying to look for the little people. We would also study the flowers, she said that each one had a special ability. Her favorite was the lily because it could send messages. After awhile, I would give up and we would lay down in the soft grass. she would tell me that even thought we can't find them, they know we're here.
I reflected on it then, while her casket was being put into the ground. I was one of the only people crying at her funeral. Everyone, except for my grandfather and I, was standing there looking down at the ground. They had an imaginary mask on that had a frown, but under that mask they were all smiling, saying to themselves " finally that old crazy bat is gone."My family hated my grandmother.
She was fun and imaginative. My parents and relatives were stiff, all business, and absolutely never fun. They all owned their own businesses and shares in companies. They say they had no time for imagination or silly stories. Sadly, the two people who hated my grandmother the most, were my parents. The only reason I ever saw my grandma was because they didn't have enough time to take care of a kid, so they sent me to her house. I always preferred it there than home.
At home I was nothing but a nuisance. I wasn't even aloud to touch anything out of my room. Also, ever since I was three to till I was fifteen, I was told, I was the worst accident they have ever made.
The ceremony ended, people walked past the grave and spit on it. The scene was horrible, even the grave digger gasped at the pure hatred that was shown. I waited for everyone to finish giving their "good-byes." In my hand I held a lily, the last one that bloomed in her garden before fall hit. My face was covered in tears.
I brought the flower up to my lips, I whispered " I love you, I miss you, let the earth fairies take care of you." I kissed one of the petals and placed it on top of her grave.
