Chapter 1
It’s a very warm June evening in New Camden the setting sun is emits an atmospheric yet dull orange glow. The water beneath me moves erratically as a riverboat floats its way under the bridge as it slowly moves in to my eye line. I can’t help but notice all the blue rope just cast aside on its roof. I can just about make out my reflection in choppy water as I stare back down in to the canal. I always seem to find some solace when I just sit down and take in the sights of the canal bank. I examine all of the people sitting on the canal bank eating, drinking and talking amongst each other they all seemed to be trapped in their own state of bliss. The beat of an electronic tune from a market stall satisfies my ears as my shoes clap together in appreciation. I turn around away from the canal and place my feet on the ground, and let my eyes wonder up at the tall skyscrapers that just seem to disappear in to the clouds whilst they simultaneously stretch on for miles further on past the horizon and disappear in a haze of large luminous neon signs and streetlights, each scraper has countless amounts of windows and satellite dishes , The year is 2021 the sights the sounds and geographic boundaries of London has changed dramatically over the last nine years, But the people who inhabit this city have changed even more.
Elves, Endrancers and Synths. These were all species that only existed in the realm of online video games and fantasy novels, hobbies that only a nerd such as myself would enjoy but now they walk, talk and work alongside us Humans. I think we all knew that we were not the only ones out there in the universe, but we spent all our time and resources looking up to the night sky and in to the depths of space for answers and contact, when in fact both lay seemingly beneath our feet. Its a shame that our date with the then unknown had to spawn from one London’s most tragic events almost a decade ago
There are certain events that have happened in the world, events that forever leave a mark in your mind they become something you can recall almost instantly, the you remember where you were when it happened moment. 9/11, Japanese Tsunami, The Arab Spring Uprisings and the London Pulsar Tragedy.
The Pulsar Tragedy was named after the Pulsar Collider or Project Talon as it was codenamed. It was a large circular machine with a circumference of 7.3 miles that sat beneath London, Its design was heavily based off of the Hadron Collider located in Switzerland and its goal was also similar, By smashing two particles at a high velocity speed within its large cold steel circular tubes a residue from the two smashed particles would be left that according to scientists is one of the missing pieces of evidence that could explain the creation of our planet and our very own existence
Chapter 2
I can clearly remember all the commotion about the original Hadron Collider and the amount of questions that my poor physics teacher had to answer from the class about it, but I couldn’t blame them for it. If you spent just one minute reading and watching the news about their terribly researched conclusions regarding a black hole then you would have some questions as well
Some subtly dubbed it the Armageddon Cannon a mechanical device that would end human life. In some heavily Christian locales saw this as the Second rapture. But very few fell victim to their pandering, fear mongering or lies in fact a lot more people were taking it with humour as I can clearly recall all the adverts on craigslist of people offering to “look after” cars, homes and money should they survive.
But in the end millions watched with a sense of controlled anticipation and all we just saw was a grainy two second clip with grey a bubble appearing to pop. After the tremendous amount of hype created by the media institutions the lack of visual awe was disappointing but the Earth was still spinning we as a Human race were still alive, a few without a house and a car but we were all here.
Because of that there was no was no exotic media hype about the London Collider on the run up to its launch. I mean sure people were annoyed that such a device has been worked on in secret from the people of the city that lived above it, but once the scientific benefits were explained and that more importantly no one’s taxes were being spent on its construction, funnily enough people were no longer annoyed and we all eagerly marked down the 13th of September on our calendars.
The fateful day of the launch came, I got home just in time from an exam ready for the grand switch on at twelve minutes past three in the afternoon. I switched on the TV the camera is still focused on the blonde haired newsreader. She was draped in a fine white suit and had just finished an interview with one of the scientists who was working on the device since day one. She thanked the scientist for the interview and turned back to the camera with her eyes scrolling to the right as she analysed the autocue and announced in her inimitable style
“The all clear has been given we are going live to the control room“
The camera then cuts to around twenty people each of them wearing a uniform of black trousers, yellow helmet and a blue polo shirt with the emblem of the GIGA Corporation stitched on the right hand side of the chest. All of them stand proud with their arms behind their back and shoulders dropped. The camera then zooms in to the one of the members who is standing behind the button. He takes a deep breathe stares at the red button for a few seconds before he raised his head stared in to the camera with a thousand mile stare and declared.
“Initiate countdown sequence, Pulsar Collider is online in 5….4….3….2….1”
I remember that the man hit that red button with some force as his fist was clenched letting his thumb poke out of the index and ring finger
Then all of a sudden a loud noise erupts from a section of tubing that was placed near the activation button. The entire team turned their necks sharply towards the tubing except for the one guy who pressed the button who just stood there with his neck angled down seemingly in despair. The cameraman becomes distracted and panned and focused right on to the rest of the team who were discussing frantically,
“Quick override it using the manual shutdown” Yelled one of the uniformed scientists
“That’s what I’m trying to do its not activating” Loudly replied another
The camera panned away from the team to the one guy standing behind the red switch the camera zoomed in on him, and for five seconds he just stood there like an abandoned puppet then he slowly raised his head, tears sliding down his rosy cheeks and uttered one word. Sorry
A burning white and blue light rapidly filled the screen before the live television feed was suddenly cut and the words transmission lost flickers on to my screen.
