“C’mon, toss me your bag first.” She says, motioning him to throw to her.
“Why…?”
“Just do it!” He sighs in frustration, tossing his bag to her. She catches it with ease and softly tosses it to the ground beside her own. “Now your turn….”
“What…!?”
“They’re out front as well so you have to climb down through the tree. Now hurry up! Trust me, I won’t let you fall.” He hesitantly climbs out onto the ledge and grabs her hand.
“You sure this branch can hold us both?”
“I have a feeling it will.” She says with her trademark mysterious smile.
[Might as well listen to her, all ready said I trusted her.] He sighs. [ I must be going insane! I’m following a girl I barely know!] He debates with himself as she yanks him into the tree. He lurches forward from the sudden pull and he falls on top of her as she falls back against the tree. His hand pins her hand against the tree above her head as his face is mere inches from hers own while his other hand somehow lands on her hip. A soft blush paints itself across their cheeks as they scramble apart.
“S-sorry about that…a few fan-girls were coming near and I had to think fast….” An awkward silence hangs between and she clears her throat. “You should climb down, the coast looks clear. I’ll close your window.” He easily jumps down from the tree as she closes the window and follows his example. They grab their bags and she leads the way to the school in silence.
[Why is she helping me…? This isn’t the first time either.] He stares at her back in utter confusion, unable to really grasp who she is completely. She completely forgets about the awkward moment or pretends to and hums a small tune as they head down her secret pathway. They arrive with no trouble at all and are at the back of the school. “The back door is locked how do expect us-what are you doing!?”
Terry is kneeling before the door, at the knob’s level, picking at it with something.
“What does it look like?” She says her back still to him, to busy picking the lock. “I’m getting us in the school unnoticed…just give me two more seconds.” Literally, two seconds later, a muffled click is heard from the door and she proudly opens the door for him. He stares at her in disbelief so she has to yank him in and shuts the door behind him.
“Where did you learn to pick locks?” He tries to understand the scene that had just taken place before him.
“Paulie taught me.” She grins. “Well I told ya’ I’d get us in with out being noticed.” She winks and heads down the hall whistling. Riku just watches her turn the corner, dumbfounded. He eventually follows her, curious to know who Terry really is.
“Ah, Ms. Terry, I see you decided to join us today.” Mr. Thales comments. Terry shrugs, grinning. “Well since you were absent, you do not know your partner.” Terry cocks an eyebrow at Mr. Thales who is grinning like an insane mad scientist whose creation is almost completed. “Your “husband” for now is Riku.”
“He’s my-who’s my what?”
“I now pronounce you “husband and wife”! Now you all may break up into your couples and start on the packets!” Riku comes and sits across from Terry and they just stare at each other blankly.
“So….” She says, breaking the ice. “We’re “married”…?” She says using air quotes. He just nods his head silently. “Then I guess you have the packets….”
“Uh yeah….” He pulls them out and places them on the desk. She picks up one and skims through the information quickly.
“Should I write or do you want to…?”
“Uhh you write; you have better handwriting.” He says quickly and she shrugs, agreeing. They fill out the marriage license packet completely and quickly. Another awkward silence comes between them as they stare at each other once again. Terry combs her fingers through her hair and sighs.
“Now what…? We have like ten minutes….” She says glancing at the clock above the door.
“The other assignment is to get to know your “life partner”.”
“Okay…then where do you want to start?”
“Where do you go…usually, after school?”
“Places…I do my usual thing.” She replies vaguely.
“Which is…?”
“Why do you care so much?” She hisses with her eyes narrowed. For the past month or so, Sora, Kairi, and him have been bugging her about where she goes. Not really use to this attention, it bothers her slightly. It is weird to have people who use to mock you care about you. “Before you were just like everyone else! You didn’t give a damn at all! Now you’re all concerned? Maybe you did go on some damned life changing journey! I mean you of all people concerned about me at all!? You sure as hell changed!” She snaps, blurting out her rage. She realizes this soon after as Riku stares at her a bit wide eyed from shock. “Sorry about that…I shouldn’t have snapped like that.” She bites her lower lip, combing her fingers through her hair as she looks at the floor, unable to look at him.
“No, you’re right. I didn’t give a damn before. But that was before, I don’t know why, but I want to get to know you.” He admits honestly. She just looks at him with shock apparent on her face.
“Oh-well I….” She fumbles a bit with her words. “I sail around really…trying to find some things.” She shrugs, propping one leg on her chair and hugging her knee.
“What exactly…?”
“I-I don’t know really…” She realizes herself. “I just want to see everything there is to see before it’s too late.”
“Too late…?” She shrugs in reply, unable to answer the question herself. He ponders a bit to himself as Terry looks off into the distance out the window. He opens his mouth to say something, but the bell rings, signaling that it is lunch time.
“You better go, Sora and Kairi are waiting.” She says emotionlessly standing form her seat. She grabs her lunch to leave but is stopped by someone grabbing her wrist. She looks to see Riku holding on to her.
“S-sorry about that-Uhh-Sora and Kairi have Wakka, Tidus, and Selphie. Where do you go for lunch? I want to hang out with you.”
“Uhh-then follow me I guess.” He grabs his lunch and follows her to the roof of the school. “Here we are….”
“So this is where you go….” He says sitting across form her. “Aren’t you ever lonely…?” She looks up at him, her sandwich stuffed into her mouth, a pure un-girlish un-manner thing to see. He grins lightly in amusement.
“What do you think?” She swallows her food. He nods his head in reply, biting into his own food. “I guess I’m use to it…but can one ever be use to being lonely?” She ponders aloud to no one in particular. “You were pretty lonely before too. At least I thought so.” She shrugs. “Sure you had Sora and Kairi, but they had more of their own thing as well. It was to an extent you had them. I could tell…maybe that’s why you were so distant.” Riku stares at her in utter disbelief. The last person her ever thought could ever understand him just blurted out everything he felt and still feels. Another thing that leaves him stunned is that she deduced this years before as well!
A strange swell of emotions erupt in him, causing him to panic. He abruptly stands to leave and she realizes why.
“Sorry…I just thought you would like to know…I guess I said too much too soon hunh?” He turns to leaves and she sighs sadly.
“Smooth move Ter’, first chance and ya blow it!” She sighs once again. Riku’s hand stops an inch away form the door knob. He turns to see her lonely form sitting there across the roof. What did he fear? What was he running from? He had no clue at all. He was just afraid-maybe anxious-but for what? He grips his hand into a fist and fights with himself before heading back to Terry.
“Sorry, I thought I forgot something….” He lies horribly. “Realized I really didn’t need it yet, I can get it when we head back.”
“You don’t have to apologize or force yourself to stay. You can go if you want…its nothing new….” She smiles sweetly at him.
“I want to stay.” She stares at him in shock for a bit at first but soon smiles sweetly.
“Thank you….” They continue to eat their lunch in happy silence and head back to class as the bell rings.
