Beyond The Heart

I open my eyes to the endless landscape of air and ocean. Below me is a depthless ocean of the clearest water. I can see the ridges that populate the lowermost reaches of the ocean floor. Above me hangs a grand spiral of white clouds that encircle my position. My heart tells me that here is where I should be, the only problem with that is, I have no clue where here is. Does my heart wish to be here, in the middle of nowhere?

My scattered thoughts are interrupted by the comforting sound of air. I look a few feet in front of me; the water at that spot is swirling around. As the moments pass, the movement of the water becomes more violent. I find it harder to stand as the small waves shake the water I stand on.

Without warning, a rapid gale hits the area, knocking me off my feet fast. My back does not touch the water, as a thin layer of wind keeps me up. I feel the wind constantly moving in a circle on my back. I push myself up with my right hand, and like the air on my back, a gust of wind keeps my hand from touching the water.

Somehow, I cannot register the actuality that is the wind. This dream is weird, but I am able to realize that it is a dream. However, things are wrong in this one; I can feel the wind perfectly. I have had this dream before, but the gale has never come until now.

I raise my head to look in front of me. I find out that I am no longer alone. A slim figure in an obscenely white cloak proudly stands before me. The black lines that run down his coat seem to move, giving off an ominous aura. I cannot see his face, for the hood is up and shadow covers his face. My heart is telling me I know him. My heart tells me many things, things I find to be deceiving.

“Dominic.” His words seem to transcend his form. The words that escape his mouth echo to nowhere. “Where does your heart lie?”

Where does your heart lie? What the hell is this guy talking about? I open my eyes to find myself in some unimaginable place, standing on open water, having a shady character in a black cloak asking me where my heart lies. I mean, what else can get weird here?

“You think this is not real?” He asks me. This is kind of funny actually. I form a small smirk on my face. I can tell he’s disappointed in that. I feel like he’s forming his own smirk on his face. “I guess this is beyond you heart.”

He lifts his head up more, but I still cannot see his face. He slowly raises his hand in the air. I cannot see his skin; his hand is covered in a black glove. He snaps his fingers and the sound carries on endlessly. I can hear a large rumbling sound. The man in black points down, I can see stone rising up near the ridges. The stone rises faster and faster. The sound and the rumbling grows, I am concerned.

I jump a little once the stone levels with us. I look around to see buildings surrounding the area. This place looks familiar, maybe too familiar. The water drips off the previously submerged buildings.

“What is this?” I ask, hoping to get an answer from the man. He looks around, scanning the area.

“Looks like your city right? You surprised?”

“Cant say I am.” I honestly replied.

“Well let me make you surprised.” His tone completely changes, which scares me a bit.

I don’t know what he means by that. Well, I don’t know much of what’s going on as it is. He steps off the small stone ledge he was standing on and begins to walk towards me. He stops after a few steps and reaches both arms out beside him. I can see wind circling his arms. The sound of the swirling winds echoes throughout this hollow world. He raises his head at me, but still no face.

He points his palms at me, releasing a massive torrent of wind. I doubt I have time to blink before it hits me, so I throw myself as fast as I can. I hit the stone street hard; I feel how cold it is. I quickly pick myself up and begin running away from him. I turn my head to see that he is not chasing me, he only lowers his head. I continue running until I hide behind a familiar building, I see a long alleyway. I know that it‘s easy to be caught in a dead end alleyway, but it seems like the best choice right now. I lean against the wall and start panting. My body slowly slides to the stone ground. My left arm begins to hurt. I assume that a small amount of wind hit my arm.. The pain is sundering compared to the fear that grips me now. I am convinced that this is no longer a dream.

I want to run away, but my legs are frozen still. My mind is wrapped around the thought of death. I start to think of my life, and how precious it is. I fear losing it, even just the thought encases me with distress. Am I really this weak? Do I really deserve to live like this? I stand up with a intense conviction. If I die, then I will die standing. My arm hurts even more now that the fear is gone.

I wonder where the hooded man is. He did not follow me, is he waiting for me? I wonder what his motive is. I slowly make my way into the corner of the building. I look at the exact spot where he was standing, but he is gone. I hear a small, sunder gush of wind. I feel a hand grasp my shoulder.

“I sure hope I don’t find you here.” The man says, not really directing it at me. Ok, now’s he’s messing with me, jerk. He says it in such a way I almost forget he’s trying to kill me, almost. I jump away from him, hoping to get some distance with him. This time I wasn’t going to run, not that I could run. I can’t really fight him either. He has wind to aid him, I don’t.

“Who are you?” I said to him, hoping he will talk rather than kill me.

He takes a few steps toward me, I am uncertain of what he‘ll do next. He reaches for his hood and pulls it off. I can see his face now, it is not what I was expected. He is several years older than me, but his face shines with youthfulness. His face is scarred by a long, diagonal cut above his nose. The scar is thin and light, I guess it’s from a blade. His nicely cut hair is a light black, the same as mine. He looks familiar, like a childhood friend. His name eludes me, but I feel like I should know it.

He raises his sleeve to reveal his right arm, I can see words that run up his arm, but I cannot read it. From here, it looks like a foreign language. Honestly, I wouldn’t find that surprising right now.

“This is me, this is my purest form.” This makes just as sense as the rising city and the wind that seems alive. This man appears, continues to ask me about my heart, attacks me, then shows me a tattoo proclaiming that this is his purest being. This might have some underlying meaning, but I’m not catching it.

My eyes focus on those words, then it comes to me. This man is a soul, my soul. That abstract thought ties all these confusing and isolated events together. The man in the coat wanted me to figure this out, but for what reason?

I’ am not given time to think before he charges at me. I can clearly see the rage in his eyes. This attack feels different by the fact I can now see his face, that feeling of knowing his name also contributes to it. His arm is cocked back, ready to hit me, to kill me. His movement seems slurred, he normally fast movements seems slow. I feel something different now.

I raise my hand to him, the same way he did to me. He swings his arm at me, but his blow is parried by the wind that now guards me. I feel control over the wind now, this is soothing and protecting. I feel this new energy originating from the center of my body. I never felt this way before. I can feel the wind, almost like it’s another part of me.

I can see the surprise in his eyes. His attack, which was once deadly, is useless now. The intense force of the launched air begins to die out. After a few moments, his attack stops completely. He tilts his head down looking disappointed once again.

I feel the energy change it’s direction. The wind before me disperses. The feeling of the energy creeping up my arm is scary at first, then it becomes normal. Wind forms around my right arm, this is eerily similar.

The wind that was comforting at first quickly turns to painful. I fall to my knees in agony, it feels as the wind is crushing my arm. My breathing becomes heavier as the pain only intensifies. I let out a yell that echoes throughout this world of self. Wind slowly now fully forms around my arm. It feels light, almost like it’s an extension of my arm.

I look up to see that the man backed away from me, his arm by his side. He smiles happily. “I thought you weren’t going to get it.” He says to me. He was testing me, hoping I would gain this power.

I stand up, the pain that crippled me gone. I’m able to look the man in the eye, no longer bound by that immense fear. I walk towards him, but he doesn’t move. I pull my right arm back to hit him, but still he doesn’t move. I get close to him, I can see the look in his eyes perfectly now. It is neither terror or surprise, but of relief. He raises his arms out evenly in a crucified fashion. I guess he wants me to hit him, but I wont, I’m not that mean. I place my hand gently on his chest. The man lowers his head.

“You’re too soft Dominic.” He looks up to me. He’s still smiling, but his eyes are listless and dull.

His body slowly disperses into small pieces of white light. After a few moments, his entire body is gone. The white pieces of light linger in the air then flies upward. This feeling is as soothing as the guarding wind. This whole ordeal started out odd, but ended in calm. I stare up to the skies. The spiral of clouds had dispersed, showing clear, beautiful skies. I close my eyes and smile. I am glad the end has come. I mean seriously, that was some weird s**t.
