Beyond Time and Space
Episode 2 - The Omega Corporation
---
As the sirens in lab continued to sound, Daniel and Grandpa Matt watched the video monitors as the armored men continued to pour into the house. “The Omega Corporation? Who are they?” Daniel asked. “No time to talk now kiddo.” Grandpa Matt said while gathering up a bit of paperwork, “The barricade to the lab won’t hold for long against all that firepower. Follow me!” Leading Daniel to another door with a keypad to its side, Grandpa Matt entered the combination and the door whished open. After entering the new room, the door slammed behind them and locked shut. “What is this place gramps?” Daniel asked as he walked around the empty room. “This is a bomb shelter I built during that whole ‘Y2K’ scare. Can’t be too careful eh?” Grandpa Matt said with a laugh. “More importantly, this room is very resistant to gunfire. It would take a lot of force to get into here without the combination.”

As Grandpa Matt walked around the room flipping on lights and checking the supplies in the shelter, Daniel asked, “Hey gramps, you never told me who those Omega guys are. What’s their problem and why are we hiding from them in here?” Stopping in his tracks, Grandpa Matt turned to Daniel with a troubled look on his face. “Hmm…I guess it’s time to tell you the truth about my past kiddo.” With a curious face, Daniel nodded his head and allowed his grandfather to tell his story.

“Well, I was never a college professor. I only used that as an alibi to cover up my real job at The Omega Corporation. You see, The Omega Corporation is an underground business that specializes in all types of technology. Every piece of technology that is available to us on Earth had its roots in The Omega Corporation. They sell their information to other companies, which in turn sell it to the general public. If anything, Omega is the wealthiest corporation that you’ve never heard of. Anyway, my job there was like many others, to develop revolutionary technology for the future. However, during my many years of research, I indeed developed something revolutionary: the link between spaces. When the leaders learned of my discovery, I was initially praised for my findings and was greatly rewarded for it. However, I later learned that my discovery was what Omega had been searching for ever since its founding long ago. To them, the ability to shift into other dimensions was all the company wanted in order to increase their profits and influence. Even with this knowledge, I reluctantly began production of the device that would grant Omega this ability. However, during the device’s production, I also learned of Omega’s greater motives: To rule every known dimension. With the technology they would gain from each dimension, they would be able to forcibly rule without any opposition. Knowing this, I couldn’t possibly contribute to the creation of the device any longer. So, I packed up my research that day, left the company, and have been hiding out ever since. I guess after 10 years, they finally found me.”

Sitting in awe after listening to Grandpa Matt’s story, Daniel could only say, “Wow…uh…that’s some story gramps. So Omega is here to get back the research you took with you those 10 years ago?” With a disturbed look, Grandpa Matt responded, “I’m afraid not. Unknown to me, Omega had saved all my research in their database, so they’ve no doubt created a device to travel to other dimensions by now using my previous research. They’ve most likely come to make sure I don’t make any more of these devices. Omega isn’t exactly a company that likes to share great tech with others.” Thinking back to before all the commotion, Daniel remembered the portal that had opened earlier, “So that portal in the ground earlier…was a gateway to another dimension?” With a small chuckle, Grandpa Matt replied, “So it’s all making sense to you now eh? However, that device was only able to send objects, not living things through the portal. I was still working out the glitches in that one.” With a bit of disappointment in his voice, Daniel said, “Well, no doubt that they’ve found it by now right?” Then with a bit of curiosity, “You didn’t happen to make any more of those things did you gramps?” With a great laugh Grandpa Matt responded, “Hahaha, you know me kiddo. I never make ‘one’ of anything. Of course I made another.” With a sigh of relief, Daniel said, “That’s good, is the other one you made able to transfer people? Where is it now?” However, the moment Daniel said those words, a few soft ‘beeps’ sounded from his new watch. As he looked down at it, he noticed that the three wheels surrounding the face were spinning rapidly at different speeds and in different directions. When the wheels finally stopped spinning, a singular button jutted out from the face’s edge along with the digital display finally lighting up with only one word displayed: DIVE. “Uhh…Grandpa? This isn’t a watch is it?” Daniel said even though he already had an answer in his head. “You got it kiddo, the last dimensional shifting device is now on your wrist.” Grandpa Matt said in a somewhat joking tone.

“WHAT!?” Daniel shouted, “Get this thing off me gramps!” He said as he began tugging on the device. However, when he did, Daniel noticed that when he pulled on the watch, his skin moved along with it, almost as if they had fused together. “Whoa! Dan! Stop tugging on that thing. The watch is a part of you now. It’s accepted you as its master.” Grandpa Matt said as he grabbed Daniel’s arm. “Wait…this thing has a mind of it’s own?” Daniel asked curiously. “How could that be? …it’s a machine!” Grandpa Matt sighed at his grandson’s remark, “Is it so hard to believe? You’ve heard of a sword choosing its master in story books right? The idea is essentially the same here. If you need any further proof, I tried the watch on myself and it didn’t attach like it has here. You were meant to have it Daniel.” Calming down to the fact that a watch had attached to his body, Daniel asked, “Well, what’s this thing run off of? When I first put it on, there was no power at all. Now look at it!” After hearing that question, Grandpa Matt simply said with a small laugh, “Heh, it runs off of you of course.” “WHAT!?” Daniel shouted again, “Seriously gramps, get this thing off me! Are you trying to tell me that the watch is feeding off of me?” Ready to explain a bit more, Grandpa Matt said, “Of course not…that would be crazy. The device is fueled by your energy. Anything that you feel, any type of emotion, fuels the watch to work. It just needed a little while to charge up. I suppose all the stress I’ve put you through during the past couple minutes really juiced the watch up.”

Now pointing to the button that appeared on the watch’s surface, “Ok Dan, just press that button, and we can get outta here.” With his finger on the button, Dan stopped to hear that the only door that protected them from Omega was being pounded on. It was only a matter of time before they were going to bust into room. Without another thought, Daniel held the watch’s face away from him and pressed the button. In a flash, the same blue light he saw earlier was emanating from the watch itself and it formed the same liquid-like portal on the wall opposite from where they were. Excited from what had just happened, Daniel said, “C’mon Grandpa, let’s go!” However, as they were making their run toward the portal, the door to the room flew off it’s hinges and hit Grandpa Matt in the legs, bringing him to the floor. “GRANDPA!” Daniel yelled as he turned around to help his struggling grandfather. As he was lifting the door off Grandpa Matt, three of the armed men in dark red clothing rushed into the room and pointed their weapons at them. “Dr. Matthew Ziegler, you are under arrest! Relinquish the Diver and we will spare you and your grandson’s life!” One of the men said. With the door lifted off Grandpa Matt’s legs, Daniel helped him to his feet and began moving closer to the portal. “Stay where you are! This is your final warning!” One of the other men said as they moved closer to them. Turning to Daniel, Grandpa Matt said in a weak tone, “Ungh…you have to…ugh…get out of here. Dive through the…ungh…portal.” Clinging tighter to his grandfather’s arm, still around his shoulder, “No way gramps! We’re getting out of this together.” With a mixture of laughter and coughing, Grandpa Matt said, “They only want me for now kid. I’ve had my fun, now it’s time for you to have yours.” And with his final bit of strength, Grandpa Matt shoved Daniel toward the portal. With no time to react, Daniel couldn’t utter a single word. The next thing he knew is that he had fallen backwards into the pool of strange blue liquid. For a brief second, it seemed as if time had stopped for him. Through the ripple in the liquid, he could see his grandfather’s goofy smile. That was the last thing Daniel could remember before blacking out in a daze. “Wha….What happened?” He said weakly before collapsing onto the ground below him.
