We ran after Kane and came to the beach. Aqua and Ruby were on edge with the frying pans in hand in case of Kaijin, and Kane moved pretty quickly considering how heavy that blade was on his back. The rest of us kept our ears and eyes open for trouble. Chris was baring his knuckles, as if he really wanted to take on one of those things. Terra and Eric moved pretty swiftly and kept looking here and there every now and again, and I was just hoping that we'd make it to the town before we ran into anything. I had never been so tense in my life, and the sun above us didn't seem to move at all.
Kane pointed along the shoreline to a village made of reeds and wood floating on top of the sea. The only entrance seemed to be some planks of wood that made a bridge towards the town. It didn't seem like there was anything underneath it to hold it in place, as if that town just floated there motionlessly. We stopped for a second breathing heavily.
"Is that it," asked Eric, his breath was as hard as ours.
Kane just nodded and ran on. Chris rolled his eyes as he caught his breath and ran to catch up with Kane. Terra's breath was lighter than ours, so she just kept going at a steady pace. I guess that training she did really payed off. Eric and Ruby caught their breath and kept going too. Aqua was the last to catch her breath after me, so we ran to catch up with everyone together. We all ran to the entrance on that bridge. Suddenly, Kane put up his hand, and I came to a screeching halt a couple feet from the entrance. Then Aqua, Ruby, and Chris, in that order, crashed into me, and left me at the bottom of a dog-pile. My back seriously hurts now. Terra stopped a couple feet from us and prevented Eric from adding to the weight on top of me.
"What the hell," Chris shouted as he got to his feet and walked up to Kane until he was face to face with him. "Let me fill you in on something," Chris started, "I really hate a lot of things, and most of which you've been doing! So, cut the crap or you'll deal with me personally."
"Honestly, I wouldn't mind hacking off your head off," Kane replied, as we stared at them blankly. Then Kane looked at us, closed his eyes, and said, "just kidding."
Something told me differently when Kane turned his gaze back to Chris, but what the heck are we doing? After Ruby and Aqua got off of me, I got back to the subject. "Kane," I started, "what's wrong?"
"I forgot to mention the barrier," he replied.
"Barrier," Aqua restated Kane. "You could've mentioned that before the trainwreck," she shouted as she raised her fist in the air. "Huh," she looked around confused, "where's my... NO!" She looked over the edge of the bridge. "MY FRYING PAN!!!"
I looked over the edge to see a couple of pans sinking in the water. Then I looked at Ruby, who looked back at me puzzled and realized what was missing, as she ran towards the water's edge. "I guess it happened when we crashed," I said cautiously.
"Alexander," Ruby and Aqua said synchronized. "THOSE WERE OUR ONLY WEAPONS, AND YOU GUESS THAT IT HAPPENED WHEN WE CRASHED!?!" Ruby and Aqua practically yelled at me at the same time with the exact same words, at the same time, and almost at the same volume.
"PUT A LID ON IT ALL OF YOU," Kane shouted. He regained his composure and continued, "now, don't interrupt me." He raised his finger before Eric could say anything else. "Each city has a barrier to protect from Kaijin attacks, but some barriers have an effect on people as they walk through them. This only happens when someone passes through with an object with similar energy that the barrier has."
"An effect," Ruby interjected, "what kind of an effect?"
"I thought I said not to interupt me!"
Ruby crossed her arms and tapped her finger on her elbow, and stared at Kane harshly while waiting for his explanation.
"It's not a dangerous effect," Kane continued. "It just reacts if a person has something with them that happens to share a similar energy with the barrier. I'm just letting you know, so I don't have to explain this later." Then he passed through the barrier into the town on the water and turned to face us. Nothing changed. His clothes were still black, and the mask that only revealed his eyes was still there. "Well, we don't have all day!"
Eric gawked at the barrier, poked it, and went through. "Well, no change here," he commented. Then he stood next to Kane and waited for us.
Chris, Ruby, and Terra passed through it next. They looked themselves over, but there was no change. So, they just shrugged their shoulders and waited with Kane and Eric.
"Um, Alex," Aqua whispered to me.
"Yeah," I replied a little surprised. "Something wrong?
"Will you walk with me through this please."
What's wrong with Aqua? She's never acted like this before. I guess I could make sense of it with falling out of the sky, being attacked by a giant lizard, and being led around by some random psychotic stroy telling swordsman who just happened to be waiting for us. Man, this has got to be some nitemare we'll wake up from in the morning. "Okay, just take my hand, before Kane says something else." She took my hand, and we walked through the barrier.
I looked myself over, and nothing seemed different. Then I looked at Aqua. Her stone glowed brightly, and when the light cleared, she was dressed in a japanese school girl uniform.
We all just stared at her as our mouths gapped open at the sight her new clothes, and Kane quietly said, "well, I said, 'there was going to be an effect.'"
"AN EFFECT," Aqua screamed, as she let go of my hand and barred her knuckles. "WHAT IS THIS!? SOME KIND OF JOKE!? I NEVER WEAR SKIRTS! SO START EXPLAINING BEFORE I GET PHYSICAL," she continued screeching as she slowly approached Kane.
I hope Kane has a good explaination, or he'll be up against Aqua in a bad mood if he doesn't. Well, at least Aqua's back to normal.
