“ROCK! PAPER! SCISSORS,” they yelled leaving me and Terra out of the game.
“YES,” Aqua screamed. “GET READY TO RUMBLE!”
We shook our heads in embarrassment.
She drove her hand into the pouch on her side, pulled out a spear, and marched over in front of Kane, while I stared at her dumbfounded before running to join everyone else at the table.
“Well, someone’s fired up,” Kane remarked as he resumed his stance.
“Of course I am,” she snapped at Kane. “I blame you for getting me into this stupid SKIRT!”
“This is going to get ugly,” Ruby commented.
“She’s lost her head again,” Terra sighed.
Chris leaned in, “Fun.”
“Kane’s gonna get it,” Eric smiled.
“Well, at least it isn’t us,” I muttered.
Aqua placed her left foot forward, readied the spear at her back with her right hand, and bent her legs.
“Are you always this-“
Kane was cut off by Aqua’s battle cry as she launched a flurry of thrusts at him, causing him to drop his sword in order to avoid her attacks.
“What the hell is that,” Chris let out as his mouth dropped.
“That’s the reason why I allow her to use a frying pan,” Terra responded. “If she gets her hand on something with some length, she can do a lot more damage.”
We turned back to the fight, and she had Kane up against the wall! Luckily, there aren’t any bookshelves on that wall. Kane couldn’t react quickly enough to attack, so Aqua kept putting holes in the wall. Then the wall gave, and Kane fell into the water.
“I’m not done with you,” Aqua yelled as she slammed her weapon into the water, pulled as hard as she could on the spear, and in came Kane in a giant ice cube with his head sticking out of the top.
“KANE-SICKLE,” Eric yelled out as we burst with laughter.
“Funny,” Kane remarked before sneezing. Then the ice shattered, and Kane picked up his sword again. “Okay. This is taking too long, and you guys might actually wear me out. So, the rest of you. NOW!”
Ruby, Chris, and Eric got up and plunged into their bags.
Ruby pulled out a long scimitar like blade and smiled, “Well, this is familiar.”
“Hey, what is this,” Eric pulled out a two foot long blade first followed by the hilt. “Whoa…” He pulled out a three foot hilt. Our eyes widened as another two foot blade attached to the other end emerged from his pouch. “Dude!”
Then Chris started pulling his arm out of his pouch and pulled out a five foot long blade like Kane’s. “Oh,” Chris said in awe. “You shouldn’t have.”
Kane picked up his sword, “Okay, after this we’ll move on. Now come!”
But, they didn’t. Instead, Ruby Chris, and Eric twirled their weapons above them and slashed in Kane’s direction. Then flames began spewing from Ruby’s sword, something distorted the air in front of Eric into a visible sphere that flew with Ruby’s flame, and Chris’ sword let out a storm black needles slicing through the air.
“What,” Kane let out a second before they hit causing wood and smoke to fly everywhere, our vision clouded.
“Hey,” Ruby started. “Do you guys think that was too much?”
“Maybe,” Eric answered unsure.
“He had it coming,” Chris said coldly as everyone’s gaze turned to him. “What!?”
Is Kane alright? Now what are we going to do? He was our guide.
“You guys play a little rougher than your friends. That’s for sure,” Kane’s voice echoed. The smoke cleared leaving a deep black shadow on what remained of the library floor, and Kane slowly rose up from it and simply hovered in place. “Look at this place. You,” Kane pointed at me. “Clean this up.”
“What,” I cried in shock.
“Just do it.”
“This will take days!”
“Or, it can take seconds.”
Seconds? Oh! Seconds!
I closed my eyes and kept repeating the words, ‘I wish it was fixed. I wish it was fixed,’ over and over in my mind. Then I opened my eyes, and a small light appeared in front of me that exploded into a blinding glare.
“What the heck’s happening,” Aqua cried.
“I don’t know! Do you,” Eric’s voice echoed.
The light cleared, and we were sitting at the table before Kane moved everything. The room was as it was before we completely wrecked it, and Kane stood before us in front of the angelic statue.
“Dude,” we all uttered in awe.
“Now I can get you six going,” Kane said as he reached into his pouch and pulled out a green rock the size of a baseball that looked like a frog. “This is a Kaeru Stone.”
“You’re kidding,” I instantly responded.
“What? Do these things also have some kind of connection to Japan or something,” Aqua asked.
“Yeah. They’re supposed to be good luck charms that guarantee a safe return home.”
“Why,” Eric pressed on.
“Well, kaeru is Japanese for both frog and return home, so they’re considered to be good luck charms to get back home.”
“And, you know this, why,” Chris asked in his regularly annoyed voice.
“I’m half Japanese, so I should know a few things.”
“You ARE,” my friends yelled.
“What? You didn’t know,” I answered. “I thought it was obvious.”
“We are having a talk when we get home,” Aqua said sternly.
“Hold on,” Terra interjected.
“What,” Eric reacted.
“Why did Kane have six pouches to start with? Were you expecting us at some point, Kane?”
“No,” he answered. “It’s been part of my family’s tradition to present the traveler from your world with six choices, and the weapon they choose corresponds to their personal preferences.”
“But, you sort of just threw them at us,” said Ruby a little testily.
“I didn’t have to give you a choice in this case.”
“Why not,” Chris jerked.
“Look at the design on the bag. Each one has a design that matches with each of your gems.”
The gems, again? What did Aqua get us into?
“Wait,” Aqua started. “I found these things in a shop, and they play a bigger role in this world?"
“You didn’t find them,” Kane replied. “They found you. Now,” Kane lifted his stone a little, “I’m going out to get us a ride to the next town, Charlo. So, if you want to leave town, you can use these by saying, ‘kaeru,’ while holding them over your head to get back into town instantly.”
I stared at mine in disbelief. This world is too strange, and how are we going to fix something like it, when it doesn’t make sense to begin with?
“In the meantime, you guys can explore the town or whatever. Just don’t get yourselves killed,” Kane said as he walked out the door.
We followed him out and watched him walk to the edge of town. Then he stepped on the water and kept walking.
