“Here have some of this,” the inn keeper handed Aqua a cup of hot tea with a big smile on his face. “You should be careful in the library. It’s also a shrine and very dangerous.” He left the room with a tray and went back down to the front reed desk. We flung our coats off and onto the beds. “He’s too damn cheery,” Chris muttered. “I’d take my chances back in that other place.” Aqua sipped her tea and had a seat on one of the beds. “Yeah, but it’s safer here,” she said calmly. “Kane,” Ruby started. “Yes,” replied Kane. “Who was that?” “It was someone from the other side.” “The other side!?” “How,” Eric let out. “She had a flip side coin, obviously,” Kane answered. “So what do we do from here,” I asked as I put a blanket from one of the beds around Aqua. “Thank you,” said Aqua as she leaned on me a little. “We move on out of town, of course,” Kane replied. “Then what are we waiting for,” asked Terra. “We’re waiting on a couple things,” Kane said smoothly, “one: our ride and two: for the library to defrost.” “We have to go back in there,” Chris yelled. “Well, at least you catch on,” Kane retorted. “Why,” Terra asked. “We can get a ride to Charlo, but the one taking us wants proof that we’re strong enough to make the trip.” “Why the heck would someone want to have proof, dammit,” Chris growled. Kane pulled his sword from behind him and pointed it at Chris. “Let me finish.” Then he pointed his sword at Eric and said, “Don’t even think about it.” He reattached his blade to his back. “He wants one of you to have the water’s blessing, and when I say ‘one of you’ I mean Aqua.” We turned to Aqua who looked left and right confused. “And,” Kane continued, “to get that blessing, we have to go back to the shrine room and persuade the guards to let us by, so we can speak to Genbu himself.” Genbu? The great turtle, Genbu? “What’s a Genbu,” Ruby asked confused. “Genbu, the great turtle, right,” I asked Kane. He stared at me for a second along with everyone else. “Well,” Kane started as he crossed his arms, “fill them in.” “Um, well, uh,” I babbled. “From what I’ve heard, Genbu is one of four godlike beasts in Japanese folklore.” “Tell them the rest,” Kane shot at me. “I’m not explaining something I don’t have to explain.” I took a breath and continued, “Well, along with Genbu, there are also the other three: Byakko, the white tiger, Suzaku, the golden phoenix, and Seiryu, the eternal dragon. And, since they’re considered godlike in our world, they’re gods on Gaia, I guess.” “Exactly,” said Kane as he walked over to the window. “So, I think all of us need a rest if we’re going to meet the guards of a god.” He reached outside the window and pulled in a shutter. “So, get some sleep now. It’s been about twelve hours since you got here anyway.” “YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS,” Eric shouted as we started staring at Kane. “No,” Kane answered. “Then how-“ “GET TO SLEEP,” Kane cut Eric off, as Eric jumped into a bed. We all said our good nights and took a bed as Kane took the couch. The bed was soft, the blanket was heavy, and the room was completely dark. It feels so good just to be like this after something like today. I just didn’t know it’d already been twelve…zzz…
