• "Brown hair, green eyes, age rage 5-10, can't talk," Nick said, typing in the info. He grimaced, scrolling down. "Two girls, but they look nothing like her. Then again, that's just Vancouver."
    "Try...all of BC."
"Whatever you say," Nick said., to the chorus of "brown hair! Brown hair! Brown hair!"
"Hmm. Eight girls, yet, none of them like this."
"Like this! Like this! Like this!" the little girl chanted, marching circles around me, punching the air with each syllable.
    "Try the rest of Canada."
    "Um.....nothing."
    "North America?"
    ".....Nope."
"The entire world, then!" I said, then, looking at her, added, "four foot five."
    "Woah," Nick breathed.
"What? Is she part of some super rich family? Did they all die, maybe?"
    "Um...Alice?"
    "Yeah?"
"According to our database, she doesn't exist."
"What?" I swung into the chair, scrolling through the 26 candidates. Desperately, I erased the 'can't talk’ part, and looked again. Nothing.
"Are you sure it isn't a glitch?"
"Our computers are designed with perfect function. The simple whisper of a glitch would be demolished, and hacking is difficult, especially with 1 million firewalls and 20 89 letter combination passwords."
    "Yikes."
"I know. But still, she's right here. How is she not there?" he asked, gesturing at the computer screen.
"I don't know. But I know this," I said, looking at the girl.
"Right now, her name's Lizzie. She's under my care until I figure this out."
"Alice, are you sure? You've got two jobs, you're still in grade nine, and you live by yourself. I think we should send her off to some foster parents."
"Nick," I replied, "look at her."
We watched as she ran around the police station, yelling "password! Password! Password!" She ran into an adult, a lady who actually looked very nice, and she turned on her heel, and ran, screaming blue bloody murder, and hid behind my pant leg.
"Lizzie it is," replied Nick, typing out permission for temporary parenting of an unidentified child, and signing it carefully.
I turned to Lizzie, patting her head as she stood there, shivering, with big fat tears rolling down her cheeks.

i guess that's the end of the first chapter, guys.
