“Dead?” She screamed, her blond hair flying around as she slammed the door to her bedroom. Her almond eyes burned with anger at her eight-year-old son. “How could you take my poodle out for ten minutes in the front yard only to come back and tell me that he was hit by a car! That was a thousand dollar dog!” Her face was flushed with anger and her voice was equivalent to a person running their fingernails down a chalkboard.
“Mommy please doesn’t be mad.” I said quietly. I don’t want her to be mad at me, to beat me again. I didn’t want her to hate me even more than she already did. I love my mommy, why didn’t she love me?
“I’m not mad sweetie” She said smiling sweetly down at me, just like she smiled at the neighbors when they came by, or when her dog had won an award. “I’m furious!” She screamed and anger flew back in to her eyes. She went over to the refrigerator and pulled out a can labeled Bud Light. She popped it open and chugged it down. Then she went to get another and then repeats the same action over and over again. I hid in the corner, my hands covering my ears trying to block out the sounds of the can’s lid popping and my mom gulping it down. Please stop mom, I beg silently in my mind, you always get so mad when you drink that stuff.
“That was my thousand dollar dog that you got killed!” Her speech was different now all slurred and smashed together. but yelling did not stop even in this state. She picked up a chair, and started yelling again. “I wish I never had you!” Those words pierced my heart, I love mommy, why didn’t she love me?
I ran. Some one! Please save me! I sobbed silently in my head, to scared to say it out loud. Of course no one came to help; no one can help when no one can hear. I didn’t get far in my run to get out of the room. My mother threw the chair, and it hit me, everything went black.
I woke up with my side hurting immensely. “I hurt mommy, my side it hurts.” I breathed out in a low voice. I couldn’t move and my ribs hurt profoundly, all I could think about was the pain. My mother didn’t listen, but I still love her. Why does she hate me? A tear streaked down my cheek as I looked at my mother. “I love you mom.” I whimpered. “Why don’t you love me?”
“I could never love you!” She screamed, her eyes didn’t look their normal color to me anymore. They looked like hate, anger and blood shed to me. “I can’t believe a worthless brat like you could have ever come out of my womb!” I curl up into a ball on the ground, twisting my face in pain as I moved, the shattered chair still on top of me.
Tears flooded down my checks, I just couldn’t stop crying. The tears were warm, and I found them some what comforting, it was like knowing that something in this world could be warm. Then I realized the same type of warm was on my tummy. That was weird, because my tummy didn’t cry. I looked down to see red flowing from a piece of chair stuck inside me. I was bleeding, like that time I had a splinter, but this hurt a thousand times more.
Mommy walked over to me, hatred and insanity in her dominated her eyes. They seemed to thirst for blood. I curl up tighter, the tears falling faster, and the pain becoming all the more overwhelming. “Don’t cry my child.” She said sweetly, motheringly. “My poor, pitiful child.” Her voice was full of pity turned to loathing. “You” She kicked me. “Are” and again “The” and again “Worst” and again “Thing” and again “That” and again “Ever” and again “Happened” and again “To” and again “Me!” She screamed. I started bleeding all over now. I hurt some much. Is this what a broken toy felt like? Did mommy break me? Someone save me! Please……Everything went black once more.
Mommy was crying now. I hugged her close to me. “Mommy why are you crying?” I asked her. It’s like she couldn’t hear me, she didn’t even act like she was ignoring me. “MOMMY!” I shouted, something was wrong! I glanced around the room trying to figure out what it was. “Mommy who is that boy in the corner that looks like me? Why is he covered in blood? Why is he purple in places? Is he okay mommy? He looks broken Mommy. There is a piece of wood in his tummy Mommy. Mommy I’m scared.” I huddled close to her, grabbing on to her but I was still ignored.
There are pounding on the door. “Open up!” Yelled voices I didn’t recognize. “Open up or we’ll break the door down!” Mommy didn’t move she just sat there and sobbed. I hugged her tighter than ever before, hiding my face in her side. “I love you mommy!” I whispered. The door banged open, and men dressed in black came running in with guns. “There in the kitchen!” One shouted. Foot steps come running towards us. They busted into the kitchen and saw the scene that laid out before them. “We’re too late.” One of them said. “There he is.” A lady said pointing at the boy who was bleeding in the corner. She walked over to him and pressed to fingers against his neck. After a few minutes she looked up, somberly she stated, “Dead.”
“Ma’am you’re under arrest for killing your child.” One of them moved closer to her and hand cuffed her. “I’m not dead I’m right here! Mommy didn’t kill me!” I shouted at them, waving my arms. I wondered why they thought that boy was her son, I was her one and only son. They ignored me, and grabbed her, pulling her out of the room.
Mommy way crying harder now, she didn’t do anything to stop them, she just walked with them as they lead her out the door. “Don’t go mommy! I love you!” But again I was ignored. I started crying, I didn’t understand what was going on. Thru my wet eyes I can see a light appear and a man with wings came down from it. “Come with me my child” He said, his voice was soft and comforting. “Come with me and be safe forever” He held out his hand but I ignored him, I just stood there looking at him. “Come with me and I will tell you everything you want to know.” He offered gently his hand still out.
I reach out to take his hand, but before I took it I looked back after mommy “Will mommy be okay?” I asked him. He just smiled in an encouraging way. I gently took his hand, they were soft, and warm. He steered me towards the light, walking at my slow pace. Before we entered into the light I took one more look behind me and told him, “I love my mommy. But why doesn’t she love me?”
