• The slide on the door slammed shut and Giselle opened her eyes. She sat up on her cot and looked over at the small glass vial sitting on the floor in front of the door. Giselle blinked once and listened to the sound of retreating footsteps. Only then did she get up and walk over to the little bottle. She picked it up using two fingers and examined the contents for a moment. There was no need really; it was the same thing as every other day.
Still, she examined it. Checked it over up and down, side to side. She pulled out the stopper on the bottle and lightly pressed her nose to the top and breathed in. She tapped a nail against the reinforced glass and listened in silence to the ring it made.
Disappointed that there was nothing else to look over, she stood up and slowly walked back over to her cot. She sat down cross legged on the thin sheet and placed the vial between her two ankles.
Placing her hands one on top of the other on top of the bottle, she recited some silent prayers.
Only then did she re-pull the stopper out and tip the contents into her mouth.
The vial was empty much too soon, but Giselle didn’t show a hint of emotion at the fact. She just walked over and placed the vial down just without of reach from the thirty by thirty centimeter bared slide at the bottom of the black bullet proof door. Then she returned to her cot. She yawned and stretched her arms above her head.
Two hundred milliliters of blood was enough to keep her alive, but nowhere near enough to satisfy or fill her. Though she was still hungry, her body gave no inclination. It had been semi-starved for the past year now, so it was used to it.
Giselle looked around her cell, which was almost blindingly white. It was empty except for the cot she sat on and the small battered bookshelf that was pushed to the far wall. It held twenty dog eared and scuffed up books which showed the look of being read over and over. Giselle frowned. The guard had promised her a new book with her next meal, which had just come.
She shook her head. Why had she thought that he was actually going to bring one?
Figuring out nothing to do, Giselle laid back on her cot, closed her eyes, and let her mind wander.
