“Oh man, I’m sore,” Ryder said touching his head.
I laughed and picked at the peeling paint on my arm. Ryder had taken me on a ride in the shopping cart around Wal-Mart and we had stopped here taking a rest. I grabbed my bottle water and took a long swig of it then I handed it over to Ryder. He took it and drained the rest of it.
I laughed. “Thirsty much?”
He shrugged. “Hey, I hauled you’re a** around,”
I gasped and leaned forward to hit him but he chuckled and took hold of my wrist. He looked me in the eyes; they had a glint in them. A sexy glint. “Do you really want to try that again? Look where it got you last time.” He pointed to my face and I smirked.
“You started that one,” I said.
He shrugged and let go of my wrist. “My foster mom would have flipped if she saw the mess we made,” he said with a laugh.
I nodded. “My dad would literally have a cow,” I looked back at Ryder and just realized what he said. “Foster mom?”
He crunched the bottle in his hands. “Yeah,” I thought he was going to say more but he didn’t.
“I didn’t know you had foster parents,” I said surprised. He nodded not looking me in the eyes.
“My parents didn’t want me…so I got adopted into a foster family,” he said looking off somewhere.
“Oh…I didn’t know that.”
He nodded. “Are your parents still together?” he asked.
“Yeah, dad’s like my coach and mom’s the pep rally.”
He shrugged. “Better then nothing right?” he looked at me and I looked back. I wanted to say something. I wanted those purple gray eyes to have that light in them. He smiled but it didn’t show in his eyes.
“I guess,” I said quietly. “Sometimes I wish I didn’t have a dad.”
He frowned. “Why?”
I sighed. “Like I said, my dad’s my coach. He wants this for me, he wants that for me. Blah, blah and sometimes I can’t stand it. It’s overwhelming.”
Compassion showed in his eyes and I knew he understood some of it.
“So that’s why you’re so worried about college and your future?”
I nodded. “Yeah, I mean I want to go to college and get a good job but I’ve missed out on a lot of things.” I sighed and realized I had never told anyone this. I looked back to Ryder with wide eyes.
“I promise. I won’t tell anyone anything you tell me,” he said reading my mind. I smiled. His lips were smiling and it started to show in his eyes. His eyes watched me. Something I had never saw before in a guy's eyes. Respect. I think I had a crush on this guy. Oh wow, did I really just say this? Did I just say that I had a school girl crush on Ryder? How can that be?! I’ve never had a crush. Expect for Orlando Bloom’s butt. But that’s different! I sighed.
“Listen, why don’t you go take a quick shower and meet me at the bed in an hour, okay?” I narrowed my eyes at him. The way he said it made me heat up. He laughed. “Not like that. I mean we’ll watch a movie.”
I smiled and nodded. “Okay. Do you need a shower too?”
He looked down at himself. “Yeah, I think so,” he answered back. I laughed and stood up. I looked at him one more time, thinking, this was my first date, before I went to get clothes.
I decided I wanted to look hot to seduce him. Yeah, yeah, I can’t believe I’m saying it but yes. I was going to try. I had never felt this way for a boy before and hell why not start getting him to like me as much as I like him? I grabbed a pair of my size jeans and a dark green low cut top. I forgot how great Wal-Mart’s clothes were. I grabbed shampoo and soap before I basically ran to the bathroom to take a hot shower.
When I was done I towel dried my hair, not wanting it to get frizzy and walked out of the bathroom into the employee lounge room. I jumped as Ryder got something from the frig. “You scared me,” I said as he turned to look at me.
He smiled softly. “Sorry,”
I nodded and noticed he was getting things of popcorn ready. “Popcorn?” I asked with a smile.
He nodded, “It’s a surprise. Remember, don’t come over for another 10 minutes, I still got to get my shower.”
“Okay, but what movie are we watching?”
He sighed and tapped his finger his purple eyes looking at my feet for a moment then back up to my eyes. “What movie is your favorite?”
I thought for a moment. I kept a couple DVDs in my room away from my dad’s view
That were my favorite but I weren’t allowed to watch. I bit my lip. “Sin City,” I said almost feeling ashamed.
He smiled, “You mean Sin City by Quentin Tarantino the old movie?” I bit my lip harder. Was that bad? I nodded.
He grinned, “Okay sounds good to me.”
I smiled relived he was okay with my taste in movies. “But does Wal-Mart even sell it?”
He thought for a moment. “I’ll have to see.” I left the room feeling excited and nervous about this evening. I just hoped no one would come for us yet. I want Ryder to kiss me. Bad. I quickly went to the makeup aisle and placed some eyeliner on and pretty eye shadow and a little of red lipstick. If my dad saw, he’d died. Twice.
I grinned in the mirror and watched my expression. Then I smiled and put my head down a little and looked up. Man, I suck at looking sexy. I gave up and heard the Thin Screen turn up really loud. I slipped on a pair of swarm socks and made my way to where Ryder was. He was pushing buttons on the screen and talking to it. Well, here goes nothing…
