“Whoa, man, seriously now. Are you ok?” Derrick asked as he caught and steadied Harrold. The joking mood had left Derrick and was replaced by a wave of seriousness.
“Yeah, I just got a little dizzy don’t worry about it.” Harrold replied. Derrick gave him a concerned look, but dropped the subject anyway. Once they both received their lunch, they made their way through the crowd to their usual table. They found that their friends were already seated.
Harrold and Derrick took their seats and Derrick wasted no time making sure everyone knew about something crazy he had done over the weekend. Harrold picked at his sandwich and let his mind wander, tuning out everyone’s voices.
All of a sudden, Harrold was ripped out of his thoughts. Something, or rather someone, had caught his eye. Harrold looked up to see a girl walking by with her lunch tray. Harrold had never thought of walking as a talent until that very moment. She had long, dark, curly hair that flowed swiftly behind her. Her gaze met his. Her eyes were a sparkly, blazing green. She gave him a sly smile as she passed, revealing bright, gleaming teeth. It seemed as though everything was moving in slow motion.
“Harrold? Harrold?”
“Man, there has got to be something wrong with him today.”
Harrold snapped back into reality.
“What?” He looked around, feeling clueless. He realized all his friends were staring at him. He could feel his face turning red.
“Ooooh, who does Harrold like?!” Derrick turned to follow Harrold’s gaze, but the girl had already disappeared into the crowd.
“What? I don’t like anybody. Shut up.” Harrold said, returning to his barely touched lunch.
“Come on, dude, it’s so obvious! Harrold’s got the hots for someone!” Derrick said in a sing-song voice, laughing hysterically.
“You’re hopeless.” Harrold couldn’t help but smile. He also couldn’t help but wonder about the mysterious girl.
He wondered why he had never seen her before. Either that, or he hadn’t noticed her, but Harrold didn’t think that it was at all possible for someone of that much beauty to go unnoticed. He wondered if she might be new to the school. Most of all, Harrold wondered why he cared so much.
The girl sat down at an empty table in the corner of the lunch room, her back to the rest of the cafeteria. She pulled out a blue cell phone and hastily punched in someone’s number. It only rang once before a voice answered.
“Carina?”
“Who’s the best?!” Carina asked excitedly.
“What?”
“Guess who found Harrold! I did!” she said bouncing up and down energetically.
“Great job, but now you just have to tell him everything and hope he believes you. Plus, you still have to convince him to help us. You’re far from being finished.”
“I know that. Geez, you’re such a pessimist!” And with that, she slapped the phone shut with a flick of her wrist. She looked over her shoulder at Harrold’s table and smiled to herself.
