Chapter 8
"Are you sure you really want this to happen?" Kaitlyn questioned through the phone. "You can just ask the girls' if they won't tell anyone. You do trust them don't you?" Amory ran his fingers through his hair. "We can't take any chances, Kate. What if they do tell someone? What would happen?" "What about your other friends? They know that you're a Guardian. Did they tell anyone? No. So why are the girls any different?" They boy was silent for a moment, thinking of what to say. "You need a mate, and I think that-" "That's the reason I want to have their memories erased! I can't stand everyone forcing me to ask Aleana! Just because you're the oldest Guardian I know, doesn't give you the right to choose who I should be mates with. Aleana is a human! I can't have her for my mate! I need a Guardian." Now Kaitlyn was the one who was silent. "Amory.... Time is running out, you know that. Is there a Guardian you know that is fond of you?" "Well, er, yeah, uh, no." "Choose wisely, Amory. If Garron erases their memories, they won't know it's you when they see your face. You'll have to deal with the guilt of them forgetting what all happened between you and them. Are you sure you want that to happen?" Amory choked on his words. "Yes, I'm positive." "It's your choice. I know I can't change it. But you can. If this is what you want then I respect that." Then, for her good-bye, was a click. Amory stared at the phone replaying the conversation. Did he really want this to happen? He wished someone would tell him so he wouldn't have to put up with this decision. He placed the phone back on the receiver then glanced at Garron. "Do it," he demanded. "When?" His brother asked very confused. The boy sighed. "I said, as soon as it's possible. Gather the two girls and make sure they stay in their room. I don't want them to leave at all for the rest of the day." Skitz flopped on the couch next to Garron and questioned, "What if, you know, they have to take care of some business?" Amory scratched the back of his head. "Let them go of course." "What if they escape through the window? What do we do?" "Don't let them go to the bathroom then. Geez." Skitz was quiet for a moment before he continued. "What if they pee their pants, and there's a big puddle of yellow mess in the middle of the room? Who's going to clean it up? We can't erase their memory then wake them up to clean it up then throw them out on the street." "That's when we wait until they're done cleaning the mess then we erase their memory." "What if they-" "What if! What it, what if, what if, what if! What is with you and 'what if'?" Amory threw his hands up in the air. "What if a purple elephants fell from the sky? What if fish talked?" Skitz raised his finger. "They do talk! I heard them. They say, " and in a high, squeaky voice he said, " Skitz, Skitz, catch me, gut me, fry me, then eat me." Amory put his hand to his head as if he were saying, 'how did you become so dumb'? "Is everything alright?" A quiet voice asked. It was Aleana at the foot of the stairs with Serenity right behind her. Aleana had her hands folded while the girl behind her had her arms crossed. Both of them, however, had a depressed look on their faces. Amory flushed. "Yes, everything is fine." Serenity put her sandy hair behind her ears. "Are you really...going to get rid of our memories?" she asked. Garron stood up and sauntered over to the girls. He glanced at each of their eyes for a longing moment. "I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, " he said, "but yes, we are, and I'm the one who will do it. Please go back to your room. " "But why? We did nothing!" Aleana demanded to know. "It's for the best, Aleana. I'm sorry, but please go to your room with Serenity." Serenity stood her ground. She wasn't going to move. She was going to stay with her friend and stand up for her if she needed someone to watch her back. Sere would want her to do the same. "You're being cruel, " Aleana stated, shooting daggers through her eyes at the man who stood before her. "Sometimes you have to be evil to survive. Live is evil spelt backwards. Everyone is evil in one-way or another. No one is ever good through out his or her lives. Please understand this Aleana. Go up to your room." Garron was right. Aleana knew it too. She wasn't going to question that. Evil is to live. A question that was on her mind was, why? Why did they decide to throw away their memories? Didn't they like them as friends? Or were they afraid the world would find out about them because they told just one person? Aleana shook her head. "Okay," she said as she marched up the stairs. Serenity stared at Garron. How could he do this? He was older than Amory; he could stop this whole thing from happening, yet he won't. The girl scoffed, showing how disappointed she was in him. “You can stop this anytime you like, Garron,” she said coldly. Garron didn’t respond. He was thinking how he should put this in words. All he came up with was this, “You see, I can’t do a thing about it. Amory wants this to be done, and Guardians have to respect other Guardians requests. Well, not all the time, but-“ “So you think you have to respect his request? Do you want to do this? You’re the older than him! You don’t have to do this.” “I’m going to tell you want I told to Aleana, it’s for the best. We can’t take our chances with you two knowing who we are and all about us. You could tell someone. Then they would tell another and so on.” Serenity’s mouth dropped. She couldn’t believe this. “You don’t trust us, do you?” she questioned very demandingly. “You’re women. Who knows what you will do. It’s not that I don’t trust you because I do very much; it’s just that Amory doesn’t… Well, I guess, how do I put it? Amory, you see, he doesn’t want to waste his time worrying that you might tell someone.” Garron looked over at his brother who was leaning against the front door, glaring right back at him. “He’s frightened, Sere,” he said facing the girl once again. “He doesn’t want anyone to find out.” “He doesn’t trust us,” Serenity stated. “Yes. Our father, you see, got injured by a riot because someone found out who he was. To protect us from harm, my father gave me a spell to learn that allows me to erase a person’s memory if they ever found out about who we were.” “What happened to him? Your father, I mean.” The boy shrugged. “He disappeared. First, he’s in his bed silently asleep, and then the next thing you knew is that he was gone. The bed made and everything.” Serenity stared at her feet. “You never found out what happened to him did you?” she asked. “No, I didn’t.” Garron glanced up the stairs. “Please go to your room.” The girl shot him a dirty look as she did as she was told. Amory watched as Sere walked up the stairs. All was but a silent epidemic just waiting to be broken. He looked from Skitz to Garron, then back to Skitz. He was waiting for someone to say something; to break the quietness that was taunting him to stop this whole thing from happening. “Now,” Skitz began, “what will the all powerful Guardian do next?” Amory scoffed as he unfolded his arms as he took his time walking towards the staircase. “Garron. Do it.”
