As he was eating his birthday cookie, Harrold’s eyes wandered over to his pile of homework lying by the door. He sighed, kicked off his shoes, and flopped onto the couch. He fell back onto the soft cushions and closed his eyes, rubbing his throbbing head with one hand. His forehead felt very warm, but Harrold paid no attention to it. All of his thoughts had returned to their new favorite subject: Carina.
He couldn’t stop thinking about the way her hair bounced along behind her as she walked, the way her brilliant green eyes sparkled mischievously, the way her lips parted to reveal her dazzling white teeth when she smiled. He couldn’t help but try to re-live the sound of her musical voice.
Harrold’s eyes snapped open. He jumped from the couch and started pacing the fluffy white carpet, covering his face with his hands.
“What is wrong with me?!” Harrold had never felt like this about a girl, or anyone for that matter. All of these feelings were foreign to him.
Harrold fell back onto the couch. He had no idea how to handle this. He decided to worry about it later since all this stress was just increasing the pain in his head and the horrible feeling in his stomach. He closed his eyes and figured it would be best to just focus on relaxing. After about two minutes, Harrold had fallen into a deep sleep.
Harrold suddenly found himself standing in the middle of a clearing; a dark forest lay around it. The only light was from the full moon and the many stars scattered across the night sky. The sound of footsteps penetrated the massive silence. Harrold turned to see Carina running towards him, carrying a bundle of blankets in her arms.
“Carina?” His voice didn’t sound like his own. It sounded as though he was listening to a far off echo. Harrold took a step forward as Carina came near. She just kept running as though she hadn’t heard him. But, how could she not hear him? He was standing right there and there were no other sounds to overcome his voice.
Nevertheless, Carina kept going, looking over her shoulder repeatedly, as if she were being pursued. She slowed to a stop after she had passed Harrold. Harrold heard her start to sing a song quietly, a familiar song. Harrold stepped closer and finally realized why it seemed so familiar. She was singing the lullaby Harrold’s mother used to sing. Harrold looked over Carina’s shoulder and saw that she was singing to a small child, who was sleeping peacefully. The child opened his soft brown eyes and stared straight into Harrold’s. A small tuft of dirty blonde hair lay upon his forehead. It was the same color as Harrold’s.
Harrold’s eyes widened as he realized what was going on. He recognized the small child from pictures in his photo albums he had at home. Carina was singing his mother’s song to him…as a child. It was baby Harrold.
Suddenly, Harrold was falling backwards. The image of Carina singing softly to baby Harrold slowly fell away. All of the deep colors of the forest surrounding him melted away. He tried to move his arms, catch hold of something, or keep himself from crashing. His body would not respond.
Harrold forced his eyes shut and braced himself for impact as he fell into a pit of darkness. He was soon surrounded by it. It felt as though he had fallen into the black waters of an ocean. He felt his eyes open. The darkness pressed against them. He realized he was drowning. Carina’s voice was echoing around him. Then, there was a voice in his ear, as if someone was whispering to him. It wasn’t Carina’s. This voice belonged to a woman.
