“Don’t worry about daddy. Everything will be fine.” Even though the words were meant to be comforting, the sound of her voice was very evil and they had the opposite effect.
Harrold bolted upright, covered in a cold sweat. Breathing heavily, he looked around the dark living room. Everything was the same as it had been before he had drifted off to sleep. He looked at the clock above the mantle. 5:42 am. So much for that mountain of homework.
There was a soft beeping sound coming from the phone. Someone had called and left a message while Harrold was asleep. He got up and started towards it, stopping for a moment along the way when he was hit with a sudden wave of dizziness. His headache from yesterday had gotten worse and he was feeling sick.
When he made it to the phone, he pressed a button on the machine and listened to his father’s voice as it poured from the speaker.
“Hey son, its dad. Your mom and I have to attend to a ton of business and we’re going to have to be a little far away from home so we’ll be staying in a hotel for a bit.” His father’s voice was cut off by his mother’s. “Happy birthday dear! We love you, Bye!”
“Huh.” He hadn’t even thought about the whereabouts of his parents.
Harrold made his way into the bathroom, not bothering to erase the message. Rather than having a nice hot shower like he usually did, Harrold turned the water on cold and welcomed the icy waves that washed over him. His whole body felt hot and achy but Harrold’s thoughts were elsewhere. He couldn’t focus on anything other than the strangeness of his dream. He could understand why Carina was there – she had been on his mind all day – but he couldn’t explain what Carina had been doing or why or where. It was all too confusing, and the sense of how familiar it seemed, it was so weird.
Once he dried himself off and put on clean clothes, he went back into the living room and glanced at the clock. 6:45 am. He still had about 15 minutes before he had to leave for school. Entering the kitchen, he decided he didn’t want to risk putting food in his stomach the way it was feeling today, so he got himself a glass of water.
He sat at the small, round kitchen table and put the cool glass up to his hot forehead. Closing his eyes, he thought more about the ever annoying dream.
He wondered if there was some specific reason that Carina had been singing that song to him as a child. Was that supposed to be some sort of symbolism? What was she running from? Where was she supposed to be taking him? What puzzled him most was how he clearly remembered his mother singing that song to him in the same harmonious voice. He thought back to the previous day when he had spoken with Carina. He concentrated hard on the sound of her voice and compared it with his mother’s. He thought they sounded close to the same.
“That’s impossible.” Harrold said to himself, shaking his head. He finished his drink, and put on his shoes. While he was gathering up his books and shoving them into his book bag, he thought of all his homework that had been left unfinished. Thank God for study hall. Harrold found that it was still raining when he got out the door. Holding his bag above his head to avoid getting wet, he ran to his car. Once inside, he remembered Carina’s advice about bringing a jacket. “Too late now.” He thought with a smile.
